Metronomy – Whitsand Bay lyrics
[Verse 1]
It's enough
It's enough to have a hope and help
'Cause I could
Yeah, I couldn't understand so well
It's enough
It's enough to have a hope and help
'Cause I couldn't write
No, I couldn't write it so well

[Pre-Chorus]
And I need to find some peace
But she keeps on touching me
And everyone looks at me
And everyone talks
Now I need to concentrate
But she keeps on touching me
And everyone looks at me

[Chorus]
And everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
And everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
And everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks

[Verse 2]
So I'll drive
Yeah, I'll drive us out to Whitsand Bay
'Cause it's always better
It's always better that way
Oh, I'll take
Yeah, I'll take everybody that I can
But my car's so small
Yeah, car's so small
My car's way too small, man

(My car's way too small, man)
(My car's way too small, man)

[Pre-Chorus]
And I need to find some peace
But she keeps on touching me
And everyone looks at me
And everyone talks
Now I need to concentrate
But she keeps on touching me
And everyone looks at me

[Chorus]
And everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks

And everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
And everyone talks

Yeah, everyone talks
Yeah, everyone talks
And everyone talks

It could be about a male offering help and support to a female friend who may have been abused or mistreated in some way. She is damaged; she has emotional issues; she's can't help but misread the situation. She's trying to kindle a relationship in a very obvious way with someone who simply wishes to be nothing more than a supportive friend. And she's doing it in full view of all his friends, which puts him under immense pressure to still remain the nice guy while they are starting to see him as a soft touch. They're all talking about him, possibly laughing at him, and he understandably hates it. Agreeing to once again visit Whitsand Bay with a gang of friends in tow suggests a history of caving in to her unrealistic demands that leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. He genuinely wants to help but he's too eager to please for fear of upsetting her and finding himself embroiled in a massive argument or worse. He feels used but knows he's being unfair. So he's compromising his own needs for the sake of her emotional needs, and it's making him unhappy and unmotivated and bitter. His genuine wish to be a decent friend has turned sour and he wants to back away but can't without drama. Not being able to fit all his friends into his small car is a magnified self justification for the irritation and anger he feels for being expected to yet again keep the peace. He daredn't hurt her because he knows she's emotionally very fragile but he can't see any good way out of the situation. His initial 'niceness' has lead him to a place of darkness and negativity. He feels punished. He's lost his creative optimism. He's trapped.

It sounds like a song about toxic masculinity and male molestation and or rape. The narrator constantly says she keeps touching me, and he needs find peace to concentrate, but she keeps touching him. And people are looking at him, probably either expecting to reciprocate, or to enjoy it.

In the second verse, it sounds like he wants to be alone at 'whitsand bay' which might be a getaway from what he's experienced, but then you hear this justifying of not bringing EVERYONE along. The car is way too small. It's the justification he tries to use to get her to not come along, but it doesn't work. He's pressured to bring her along to a place where he should be free from her. I think this song is about always having to fight off the judgement of experiencing female sexual violence in a world that doesn't readily acknowledge that men have a right to consent too. Everyone keeps looking at me, and everyone talks.
It's a rather heartbreaking song just for the fact that the song in it's demeanor is always way too cool. Unemotional, removed, and calm. It, narratively, displays the shame of his feelings through the discretion.
