Matt Maeson – Hallucinogenics lyrics
[Chorus]
Pushing past the limit
Trippin' on hallucinogenics

My cigarette burnt my finger
'Cause I forgot I lit it

[Verse 1]
Rippin' with my sinners
'Cause fuck it, man, I ain't no beginner
And then I crawled back to the life that I said I wouldn't live in

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause I just couldn't open up; I'm always shiftin'
Go find yourself a man who's strong and tall and Christian

[Chorus]
Pushing past the limit
Trippin' on hallucinogenics
My cigarette burnt my finger
'Cause I forgot I lit it

[Verse 2]
Drunken in Seattle
Two more xans and without a paddle
I don't remember your face or your hair or your name or your smile

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause I just couldn't open up; I'm always shifting
Go find yourself a man who's strong and tall and Christian

[Chorus]
Pushing past the limit
Trippin' on hallucinogenics
And then I crawled back to the life that I said I wouldn't live in

[Bridge]
'Cause I carried on like the wayward son
And now through and through I have come undone
And now I am just but the wayward man
What with my bloodshot eyes and my shaky hand

'Cause I carried on like the wayward son
And now through and through I have come undone
And now I am just but the wayward man
What with my bloodshot eyes and my shaky hand

[Chorus]
Pushing past the limit
Trippin' on hallucinogenics
My cigarette burnt my finger
'Cause I forgot I lit it

In the song, he’s grappling with a sense of identity. See how he repeats he is a “wayward son.” That’s an allusion to the “prodigal son” of the Bible that spends his inheritance partying, then is welcomed back with open arms by his father. I’d be less confident, except he is telling someone in the chorus to go find a man that’s strong & tall & Christian. And he is hanging out with his old “sinner” crowd in the story … but he acknowledges he “isn’t a beginner.”

It sounds like he’s talking to a woman he let down, but he could also be talking to the world and its expectations of him. Feeling like a failure … he’s so high his cigarette burnt down to his finger as he stared off into his trip, detached… maybe escaping from reality.

Interestingly, when the artist gave an interview about this song, he defined himself as having grown up in a conservative evangelical home. After struggling with addiction and becoming clean, in real life, he had a relapse in Seattle.

I hear a reckoning with both his self that’s prone to drug addiction, but also his religious identity. Maybe the two are more connected than he knew, and he’s coming to grips with the effect of both on his life.

What the? How did you get that meaning?

Dude has drug issues & is telling his girl to go find a decent guy because he's falling back into the pit of drug addiction but taking hallucinogens gives him enough perspective to say that to her instead of dragging her down with him.

Hallucinogenics are not to be reckoned with if you are looking to get high on a whim, which is what I think burning finger on the cigarette because "he forgot he lit it" symbolizes...

Hallucinogenic drugs tend to activate your sense of perspective and self awareness, bringing you to grips with reality as its sense is chemically manipulated. As you come down so does the wool over your eyes. We tend to put a mask on over our personal conflicts, expectations, and the reality which contrasts said expectations.

Maybe Matt is describing the conventional relationship between a man and woman or an ideal man for himself. Perhaps he is describing the plight of a daughter who could use a fresh sense of perspective on what she needs, that had to be realized through realizing herself.
