Tommy James – Draggin' The Line lyrics
Making a living the old, hard way
Taking and giving my day by day
I dig the snow and the rai nand the bright sunshine
I'm draggin' the line (draggin' the line)

My dog Sam eats purple flowers
We ain't got much, but what we've got's ours
We dig snow and the rain and the bright sunshine
Draggin' the line (draggin the line)

I feel fine
I'm talking about peace of mind
I'm gonna take my time
I'm getting to good times
Draggin' the line (draggin the line)

Loving a free and feeling spirit
Hugging a tree when you get near it
Digging the snow and the rain and the bright sunshine
I'm draggin' the line (draggin the line)
Draggin' the line (draggin' the line)

I feel fine
I'm talking about peace of mind
I'm gonna take my time
I'm getting to good times
Draggin' the line (draggin the line)

The song came out on an album called Christian of the World in 1971 and was a big change from other music from him. The recordings were pretty serious and today would be called contemporary christian. He was one of very few who took on the subjest of religion in rock or pop music. Others including Elvis did some copy of gospel songs but not original music as this album was. All that said I agree with rsjbkj and believe "Draggin the line" would be most related to the old saying "Towing the line" Try googling that one.

I googled the meaning of the idiom draggin' the line and at least one person thinks it refers to doing a line of cocaine. You can certainly read that into the lyrics. I haven't made a decision on that, but whenever I hear this or any Shondells song it takes me back to Summertimes in the 1960's, and garage bands playing down the street into the night, as I had my face pressed against the window screen when I was supposed to be asleep. Ice cream cones and summer carnivals. The sound of a fan in the window cooling the hot Summer nights. I didn't know what cocaine was in those days.
