Terry Reid – The Road We Chose lyrics
Well there’s so many statements
And there’s so many words
Voices in the city
That are screaming to be heard

There’s radicals and rascals
Reasons to be heard
Meanwhile back in Jimmy’s city
It’s your turn

Talk about children
Talk about fame
Talk about anything that’ll cause you pain
There’s many in the cities
And there’s many little towns
But there’s always some kid
That’ll go talk it around

I’m talking about Slim and Tommy
Paul will do just what he wants to
Talk about Dave’s got a story
Just tried to help
But everybody really got to help themselves

Down in Atlanta
You can do what you do
Back you can take a few on
Soon as you can do
And you can walk around with no shoes
And you ask Mr Jones
And he won’t tell you the truth

Back on the West Coast
Everyday they must sustain
I’ll tell you all
The best thing that ever really happened
Was to get up a band and get together again

Seen it before
You will see it again
Is this the point of no return
It’s just the strange infraction
Between lovers and friends

Is this the road we chose

Meanwhile back on the West Coast
Everyday they must sustain
They tell you how the best thing that’s ever really happened
Was just to split up a band and get together again

Seen it before
You will see it again
Is this the point of no return
It’s just the strange infraction
Between lovers and friends

Is this the road we chose
Is this the road we chose
Is this the road we chose
This is the road we chose

Well there’s so many statements
And there’s so many words
The voices in the city
They all scream out to be heard

There’s radicals and rascals
Reasons to be heard
Meanwhile back in Jimmy’s city
Had to make sure that he’s heard

You could talk about children
You could talk about fame
Talk about anything that’ll cause you pain
While there’s many cities
And many little old towns
But there’s always some badass kid
Go talk it around

Meanwhile back on the West Coast
Everyday they must sustain
They tell you how the best thing that’s ever really happened
Was just to split up a band and get together again

Seen it before
See it again
It ain’t the point of no return
It’s just the strange infraction
Between lovers and friends

Is this the road we chose
I suppose so
Is this the road we chose
Is this the road we chose
This is the road we chose
Is this the road

This was a song Terry wrote in which he questions "is this the road we chose?", answering it with I don't think so. It's really a song in 3 parts. It talks about what was going on in various parts of America, referencing his friends. It deals with the fact that everyone was getting ripped off by the 'radicals and rascals', yet it's also a song about if you get knocked down, you gotta get back up again. Hence the references to splitting up the band and putting it or another band back together. In essence the message of the song is "never let the bastards grind you down!".

One interesting thing to point out, is that this was one of the first times that the song was played live, and Terry - as you hear- got lost and added a verse that never existed by mistake. The "Down in Atlanta" verse was made up on the spot, it's one of his genius tricks that he does. There should have been a solo break there, but he committed and as you see he just about made it out ok. Had he not, he would have kept going until he did! I've included the verse because it's on the album, but if you are going to play the song, I refer you to the Borderline version on YouTube by GoodGigVids. That's pretty much the definitive version of the song.
