Steven Curtis Chapman – For The Sake Of The Call lyrics
Nobody stood and applauded them
So they knew from the start
This road would not lead to fame
All they really knew for sure was Jesus had called to them
He said "Come follow me" and they came
With reckless abandon they came

Empty nets lying there at the waters edge
Told a story that few could believe and none could explain
How some crazy fishermen agreed to go where Jesus lead
With no thought for what they would gain
For Jesus had called them by name and they answered

Chorus
We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die
For the sake of the call

Drawn like
the rivers are drawn to the sea
No turning back for the water cannot help but flow
Once we hear the Savior's call we'll follow wherever he leads
Because of the love He has shown
And because he has called us to go we will answer

We will abandon it all for the sake of the call
No other reason at all but the sake of the call
Wholly devoted to live and to die

Bridge
Not for the sake of a creed or a cause
Not for a dream or a promise
Simply because it is Jesus who calls
And if we believe we'll obey

Chorus

"For the Sake of the Call" was released in 1990 as the pilot single for the album which bore the same name and carried the same message. It quickly rose to the #1 spot on the Christian charts, and remains a fan favorite and religious standard to this day. One of the reasons for its enduring fame is its inspiring message.

It is based off of the account of Jesus' calling of the disciples. They came from all walks of life as fishermen, tax collectors, and political activists. They were far from saints: each of them would, at some point in their life, turn their back on their leader in some way or another, and one of them would even betray Jesus to be crucified. Every one of them, however, had this in common: they were all called by Christ, and they all answered.

A lot of Christians have lost sight of that in the 21st century. Following Christ is no longer a conscious, full-time labor but has become a one-time prayer that sets you up for eternity so you can turn around and enjoy your share of success and prosperity at the Lord's expense. But Jesus said "if any man has life, let him take up his cross and follow me." Though many have forgotten this important message after two thousand years, it still must define every aspect of our lives. Just as the disciples forsook all to follow Jesus, we, as Christians, are called to forget everything else and overcome whatever keeps us from doing His will. What better way to show that we are grateful for what Christ has done for us?
