Steely Dan – Gaucho lyrics
Just when I say
'boy we can't miss
You are golden'
Then you do this
You say this guy is so cool
Snapping his fingers like a fool
One more expensive kiss-off
Who do you think I am
Lord I know you're a special friend
But you don't seem to understand
We got heavy rollers
I think you should know
Try again tomorrow

Can't you see they're laughing at me
Get rid off him
I don't care what you do at home
Would you care to explain

Who is the gaucho amigo
Why is he standing
In your spangled leather poncho
And your elevator shoes
Bodacious cowboys
Such as your friend
Will never be welcome here
High in the custerdome

What I tell you
Back down the line
I'll scratch your back
You can scratch mine
No he can't sleep on the floor
What do you think I'm yelling for
I'll drop him near the freeway
Doesn't he have a home

Lord I know you're a special friend
But you refuse to understand
You're a nasty schoolboy
With no place to go
Try again tomorrow

Don't tell me he'll wait in the car
Look at you
Holding hands with the man from rio
Would you care to explain

Who is the gaucho amigo
Why is he standing
In your spangled leather poncho
With the studs that match your eyes
Bodacious cowboys
Such as your friend
Will never be welcome here
High in the custerdome

Probably one of my Steely Dan favourites, as much for the melodies and harmonies of the chorus and the pure overall songwriting craft, but the lyrics have always interested me. I see a respectable hypocrite entertaining dinner guests at his Mailbu home when he answers the door to two degenerates whom he knows from perhaps the seedier side of his life. He attempts to get rid of them before they embarrass and expose him. However, I feel there's more to it or that I am missing important nuances and so I'm prepared to stand corrected. In any case, I find I'm in sympathy with the hyprocrites position, odly, enough, or that I understand his loneliness and vulnerabilty, his underlife coming finally to seek him out. I've played this song so many times. Steely Dan's musical mix is truly impeccable but what really triggers me on this tune is what do they really mean by it. What was their state-of-mind when they wrote this down. If my hunch is right, man--they've seen them coming way before hand. Correct me if I'm wrong. Gaucho--in the dictionary refers to the native cowboys of the South American pampas, usually of mixed Spanish and Indian ancestry. Now look at the lyrics of the song-- wow there's the line unmistakably drawn.
