Stanley Brothers – Angel Band lyrics
My latest sun is sinking fast
My race is nearly run
My longest trials now are past
My triumph has begun

Chorus
Oh come angel band
Come and around me stand
Bear me away on your snow white wings
To my immortal home
Bear me away on you snow white wings
To my immortal home

Oh bear my longing soul to him
Who bled and died for me
Whose blood now cleanses from all sins
And brings me victory

[chorus]

I know I'm near the holy ranks
Of friends and kindred dear
I brush the dew on Jordan's banks
The crossing must be near

I've almost gained my heavenly home
My spirit loudly sings
The holy ones, behold they come
I hear the noise of wings

This is a very old hymn. It was written in 1862. The words Ralph Stanley sings are slightly different but the thoughts and sentiments are still the same. I think of each of us nearing death and taking great comfort singing this hymn. Many a voice has sang this at many a funeral to remind the living that death is coming. If you believe in Jesus Christ and have kept your house in order, you can sing this hymn loud and happy to heaven as the time draws near for you. You may hear the flutter of wings for yourself. What a glorious uplifting hymn.

I had this song played at my mom's funeral two days ago. The version I used was by the Happy Goodmans. I can very well see a band of angels standing around a dying believer, ministering to them while waiting to take them home to heaven. I tell you what happened during the last weeks of my mom's life. I kept hearing music but there was no television or radio on, nothing, nowhere that the music could be coming from. It would start when there was nobody around but me, my sister and our mom. It was maybe a choir with a man leading. I heard it for 2-3 weeks then the last week my sister was here also and she heard it. I did not even mention it to her before she said that she heard it. When mom died the music left with her. I know it was angels ministering to us. God is real and He is good!

Wow! I'm not a spirital man at all. My father played bluegrass and I grew up to love it along with blues, rock n roll, and metal. I don't think there's any type I don't like. Classical, opera. All. But this song done by ralph stanley has always called me. I listen to the words although very slightly different from pearl jone version. When I listen to it I see a soldier thinking this in his last moments. Or someone very spirital passing thoughts. The way stanley played it, porter wagner, and others held this song in the strongest regards. The song calls to me. Makes me want to believe. Joe at wkcomputers@live. Com.
