Ryn Weaver – Pierre lyrics
I danced in the desert, in the pouring rain
Drank with the devil and forgot my name
Woke with somebody when the morning came
No one there to shame me for my youth
'Cause I wouldn't be with you

And then I found me a lover who could play the bass
He's kinda quiet, but his body ain't
Spend the days dreaming and the nights awake
Doin' things we know we shouldn't do
'Cause I wouldn't be with you

Says he can't believe he found me
Wraps his arms around me
Yeah-eah, eah-eah-eah-yeah

I can't let him in
You call me up and ask me how I've been
I'll call your bluff and
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
No, I can't let him in
You play me rough, but I won't let you in
So, call my bluff, I'll
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies

Oh, count down to the day they may come true

And I fell for a vagabond, a month at tops
Lied and said his bike was in the "motor shop
Drove my car once and made the tire pop
Still we had some fun, till I came to
'Cause I wouldn't be with you

On the Fourth of July, I met a man, Pierre
Lied about his age, but I didn't care
Spoke in broken English but the heart was there
In those eyes of sky and ocean blue
'Cause I wouldn't be with you

Says he can't believe he found me
Wraps his arms around me
Yeah-eah, eah-eah-eah-yeah

I can't let him in
You call me up and ask me how I've been
I'll call your bluff and
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
No, I can't let them in
You play me rough, but I won't let you in
So, call my bluff, I'll
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies
Keep on telling, telling, telling you lies

Oh, count down to the day they may come true
I'm counting dow-ow-ow-ow-own
I'm still so dow-ow-ow-ow-own
I'll come around

The main refrain of this song is "telling telling telling you lies" which gives some insight into all the other lines. "Danced in the desert in the pouring rain" could be an outright lie, something the singer says to her old lover to let him know she's making the rest of it up. Or it could be a reference to how she felt--she was so happy she felt as if, despite the "desert" of the past, she's now awash with love--but either way, her intention is deceitful. Because when her old guy calls her up, she's going to call his bluff (answer questions he actually doesn't want to know the answers to, due to his own unresolved feelings for her) and this is when she tells him those lies. She's describing all her new lovers--who might be real or imaginary, but she definitely lies when she pretends to be in love with each new guy--to hurt the guy who she's not with. She might even be lying to herself rather than him, and only figuring it out when each relationship fizzles out.
"Cause I wouldn't be with you"--this refrain is also something like a lie. More accurately, she's NOT with him, so she's claiming she wouldn't be with him even if she could. She wants to believe she's choosing not to be with him.
"He's kinda quiet but his body ain't"--this is a bass player, a mudician, someone who speaks through physical actions more than words. He plays music, he's romantically or sexually passionate, rather than saying much. Telling your ex-lover that your new lover is quiet but his body ain't (especially using ain't instead of isn't, which makes it sound more sexual somehow) is like saying "we don't talk much, but boy do we have sex a lot".
"Pierre"--we get told his name so we know he's French. We understand that this guy, like the bass player, speaks with his body and heart, not his broken English.
"Eyes of sky and ocean blue"--most people with blue eyes have a mix of different blue shades, including Pierre. Sky blue is usually a clear and bright or light blue, whereas ocean blue is darker and might have other colours (especially green or grey) mixed in. Pierre has beautiful eyes, or at least, the singer wants her ex to believe that. Just like she wants him to believe she's happy without him.
