Religious Music – How Can I Keep From Singing? lyrics

My life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

There is no mystery why one wakes up in the morning humming this tune, never having sung it, then scrambling to find the words because it expresses the need in her soul - the torture, the outside confusion, the loneliness, the temptation to give up, the desire and need for expression thwarted, and still God whispering: You are a singer, sing these words, this is why I give you this song, to gather once again the strength to go on and to spread My Word in the way I have led you and lead you still. You will find the place for which you are searching. Keep these words close to your heart when things get rough and you have doubt. You can add more lyrics that I am whispering to you: I Am "A Bridge Over Troubled Water." I Will Never Let You Down. Continue on my Child.

This hymn is about the God who is love. The "new creation" is his new covenant of love. All the evil the world can throw at the believer will not shake the conviction that God is love, and love will win in the end. Friends (even those in prison) are undefiled by shame because they cling to the Love who is lord of heaven and earth.
