The Offspring – The Kids Aren't Alright lyrics
When we were young, the future was so bright, whoa
The old neighborhood was so alive, whoa
And every kid on the whole damn street, whoa
Was gonna make it big and not be beat

Now, the neighborhoods cracked and torn, whoa
The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn, whoa
How can one little street
Swallow so many lives

Chances thrown, nothings free
Longing for what used to be
Still, it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams

Jamie had a chance, well, she really did, whoa
Instead, she dropped out and had a couple of kids, whoa
Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job, whoa
He just plays guitar and smokes a lotta pot

Jay committed suicide, whoa
Brandon O. D. 'd and died, whoa
What the hell is going on
The cruelest dream, reality

Chances thrown, nothings free
Longing for what used to be
Still, it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams

Go!

Chances thrown, nothings free
Longing for what used to be
Still, it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives, shattered dreams

This song is so fantastic. In the song, the band is talking about their childhood and how when they were younger, they thought they were invincible and thought in a Peter Pan way, that they would never grow up. Then, after high school, their friends led other lives and it led to bad decisions. Jamie- was smart, but dropped out of school and got married and had kids. Mark - is a freeloader and is living with his parents and smoking pot, refusing to get a job. Jay - he committed suicide Brandon - probably got hooked on drugs and overdosed, resulting in death. This song is talking to both kids and adults. It talks to kids by saying that they need to treasure their childhood because adulthood sucks. They reach out to adults by basically telling their life to them. After high school, everything changes and sometimes even during high school. Life and people change and we can't do anything to stop it. I commend The Offspring for their fantastic song. Bravo, sirs.
