O.A.R. – Shattered (Turn The Car Around) lyrics
In a way, I need a change
From this burnout scene
Another time, another town
Another everything
But it's always back to you

Stumble out, in the night
From the pouring rain
Made the block, sat and thought
There's more I need
It's always back to you

But I'm good without ya
Yeah, I'm good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I'm shattered
I always turn the car around

I had no idea that the night
Would take so damn long
Took it out, on the street
While the rain still falls
Push me back to you

But I'm good without ya
Yeah, I'm good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I'm shattered
I always turn the car around

Give it up, give it up, baby
Give it up, give it up, now
Now

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around
All that I feel is the realness I'm faking
Taking my time but it's time that I'm wasting
Always turn the car around

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around

Don't wanna turn that car around
I gotta turn this thing around

When you have loved someone or been with someone for so long they become part of your life. When that person is gone, you know you are better off but its hard to go on with the empty space. You know you are better off and need a change, but you just can't get away from that one person. They can hurt you over and over again and your head keeps telling you to run away and don't go back, you try to move on. But no matter how much they hurt you, your heart always stops you in the middle of the road, and you turn the car around.

In my opinion this song means that the guy was in a long relationship that had a lot of substance and passion. However, his girlfriend kept doing things to hurt him, thus he totally felt "shattered" every time she hurt him. She did something to hurt him, and he tried to leave, but he turned around to go back to her because of his feelings for her. But he kept getting hurt, thus he can't keep turning the car around and going back to her. Thus he's good without her. That's why he does not want to turn the car around, he's got to turn the ("this thing")situation around.

This person (guy or girl) is trying to get the courage to leave their partner. But each time they leave, they immediately get home sick and want to go back to the other person. I think many people are caught up with the struggle of "am i good enough to find someone else" or is it safe and easy to back to the person that I have already invested time with. Good song.

For me, its the journey my husband took before he realized I was the one for him. I loved him from the moment I met him and was always there for him. He lived a reckless life when we met. Deep down, he wanted to be with me, but the lifestyle he was leading wouldn't allow him. He tried to push me away, but our paths continually kept going back to each other. We had a love that was stronger than anything. He tried to deny it, protect me, keep me away, but in the end, he couldn't stay away. He changed his lifestyle and got out of the shady things he was involved in. He found me again, we got married, have two kids, and a wonderful life together now.

Love has a way of controlling our steering wheels, and this song reflects that beautifully.
"In a way, I need a change from this burnout scene. Another time, another town, another everything. But it's always back to you." This piece of the song is talking about how this negative aspect of their relationship is recurring, and he truly wants to get away from it, but somehow he can't seem to fulfill his own wishes. All of the other verses are set up the same way. The chorus discusses his inner monologue of introverted questioning of his resilience towards this relationship. This entire song represents the struggle between a once beautiful and passionate love turned acidic.
People get caught up in how the love once made them feel, and constantly return to the person who once gave them that feeling, even though that person has turned from a place of comfort to a destructive incinerator of time, energy, and emotion.

This song is about a couple who truly love each other and thay truly don't want to leave but they cannot stop themselves from repeating all the awful things that they have done. They want to move on and take a break to try to sort out what has happened between them but they can't. They keep goin gback to each other. That to me means that they are ment for each other no matter how hard things get for them. In a way it does remind me of twilight but not really.

I think the song is about using drugs. How he keeps heading back for more and is deciding not to do them again by writing "I always turn the car around". The use of drugs keep breaking him and he's wondering how many more times can he break before he's Shattered.

It means to me, I keep doing the same thing over and over and never learn the lesson I'm supposed to learn. So I am stuck in this spot doing the same thing over and over again, even if it is with another person. I am trying to find someone to make my life complete instead of learning to live with myself first and becoming a whole person. Then I will be able to have a real relationship based on mutual love and communication and support instead of a co-dependent relationship where I'm looking for someone to make me whole. I am finally ready to keep doing forward on the journey of my life and I don't want to turn the car around anymore. Life is a wonderful adventure!

I read the comments then read what the write actually meant when writing the song and almost everyone of them is wrong. It’s about trying to chase happiness thinking you will find it in someone else, something else or someplace else.. burying people along the way because you think they hold you back, thinking that will fix this problem that they have.. when in reality you can’t find it because what the problem is is within you..that’s why you turn the car around because once you fix you, you realize the happiness was right in front of you..

He never mentions the word 'love' or how much this person means to him, in fact, he hardly mentions the other person at all. I think he's upset he has to deal with his own issues over and over, and they keep popping up like bad pennies. It might not even be going back to the same person, it might just be the same person he seems to always find himself in a relationship with. He has "to make his own pattern". It's so upsetting isn't it? Always having to deal with the same issues over and again. The person whom you're dating reminds you of someone from your past. Well, good luck everyone, and hope you all find what you are looking for.
