The Killers – Mr. Brightside lyrics
Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine

Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss
It was only a kiss

Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
Now my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress, now
Let me go

'Cause I just can't look
It's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Turning through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
(It was only a kiss)
It was only a kiss

Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go

'Cause I just can't look
It's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis

But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I never
I never
I never
I never
I never

“ Coming out of my cage” means Mr. Bightside could have been innocent and didn’ t know much of the world. He could be a high school graduate coming going to college, learning new experiences. He starts off fine probably just having fun and partying; until he meets a girl. “ Gotta be down because I want it all”, describes how he’ s trying to be cool so he can get the girl. Though, he didn’ t anticipate himself falling in love with her. Then he finds out she already has a lover. He starts to get insanely jealous and imagines them together when he sings, “ Now my stomach is sick, And it’ s all in my head.” He uses irony when he sings, “ Open up my eager eyes.” I doubt he wants to see the girl he likes fooling around with another man. Most people don’ t want to face the truth so they close their eyes to it. Then he uses a sarcastic tone in, “ Cause I’ m Mr. Brightside.” He saying he is a guy who looks at the good of things but it’ s obvious that he has dark thoughts. He is anything but bright.

This song is incredibly poignant to me. Shortly after I first heard it in the Spring of 2005 I found out my girlfriend was with another guy, while I was far away working.
Every time I heard this song I had to shut it off or leave. As he says, it's all in his head. And nothing is worse than what you conjure up in your head while you are lying awake at night.
The searing pain has long since passed, and it is now one of my favorite songs, however I will always associate it with one of the most crippling moments of my young life.

I have a long distance relationship. One of his bestfriend's knew it but she kissed him anyway. She was looking for love but she realized that he wasn't enough for her.
My bf told me everything e between us was very weird, neither I knew if we did broke up or not. She was waiting for her to decide if she wanted to be with him.
I felt very bad. And I do now too, thinking that she's always there near him and. Oh I don't know, I trust him a lot, but. I'm always scared and It's only in my mind, like the song says. I feel like this lyrics. They relate to me a lot.

This song is really sad. I like it tons though! The band is awesome! But that's not why I'm posting this.
Guy loves girl, the girl cheats on him and it makes him sick. He sees it and can't believe any of it! He couldn't even comprehend she could do something like this. He doesn't want to see anymore, he wants to go. He's insanely jealous and I don't think this girl is good for him at all! Look at the music video and it will explain a bunch.

My meaning to this song is:
There's this dude and a girl. (maybe the met somewhere?) and like they were good friends until they maybe kissed eachother. Now they're in a deep relationship, like deeper than deep, but he didn't want that(Destiny is calling me), and tries to say goodbye. I have more, but I'm shooting my first vid with this song on YouTube after Christmas so yeah. It's just my opinion, and it's most likely wrong. So don't get all mad.

For the last meaning. Funny? Unbelievable! Cheating for all! If you guys really loved your bf /gf, you will not have the nerve to kiss another! Reasons for divorce rates, multiple partners, many relationships! Trend of this modern society! Instead of being devoted to your bf/gf, or spouse people would rather spend more time with their opposite gender friends than their significant other? These guys chose to be alone together, looking at each other's eyes, laughing, talking, and kissing! True love will not desire to kiss a different lips. Obviously their still searching for the one.

Honestly this song reminds me of a girl who I was very close to we always had fun until she kissed me and we both freaked out because we're in pretty steady going relationships and, well the first few lines mirror how I felt when my girlfriend and I had a falling out and a month later I found out she was cheating on me so I felt conflicted whether my friend saved me or killed the relationship. And now ladies and gentlemen this the grand finale, so my friend who broke up with her boyfriend and wanted to just talk to me stops by and instead we ended up going out and now we're inseparable from each other. Funny how life works sometimes.

The girl is not be doing anything wrong but when she's not right there with him his mind goes in poisoned directions and he can't stop thinking shes with another man. He believes it so strongly that he can see them together doing things but it's all in his head. It's not real. The cage he's coming out of is his mind. He's losing it. She tells him where shes been but he chokes on it. Can't believe anything but what's all in his head. And all this hell started with a kiss. It was only a kiss.

I can really relate to the hurt in this song as I recently got dumped by my bf and then he came to my new years party and I saw him getting off with my friends and I still really like him. Worst part was all night I couldn't sleep 'coz I kept getting the images of him getting off with my friends and this song stuck in my head.

Interesting to read interpretations. One of my relationships ended because an old flame came back into my life and I wasn't over her. I was honest to my new gf and said I needed to investigate these old feelings. She let me see her, I never cheated, but there was a kiss. Long story short, everything fell apart from there, my gf broke up with me, started seeing someone else, I got back with my old flame, but nothing felt right again and I regretted ever straying in the first place.
To me, "gotta gotta be down because I want it all" meant I've got to be okay with this new arrangement because I brought it on with my own selfishness. And of course all the regret. "it started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this...", the kiss being mine. "But it's just the price I pay, destiny is calling me..." trying to make sense of everything.
That's how it fit into my experience:-) btw, I think Brandon Flowers got off easy not writing a second verse to this song and instead repeating the first:-P Still love it though.

It reminds me of the movie "Leaving Las Vegas". Kinda.
My take on it is that a shy guy finds this girl that is promiscuous-I would think maybe a prostitute. Just because of the imagery in calling a cab and smoking the guy's cigarette. He's happy with her, but he gets so sick that she keeps going to other guys. But he can't change her. I keeps telling himself that she's not cheating on him. For a time, he believes her lies of where she's been. But then he says that it's the price he pays (of trying to be with someone who just can't change) and that it's time he opens his eyes. Destiny is calling him to leave her.

I have read with interest the various Mr Brightside lyric meanings, and I really have to tell everybody the real meaning of the song. While some posts have been close to the truth, the most fundamental meaning has been missed entirely. The lyrics are based on an old film featuring a character called Tim Brightside who fell in love with a prostitute, she promised to give it up and she lied, he was heartbroken and jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge.
This song was written as a suicide note by the real ghost author not Brandon Flowers. The authors life very closely resembled this story including part of the name. He didn't go through with the suicide.
I'm coming out of my cage refers to. Coming up from a Bipolar down from which he had been doing just fine until he met her. Gotta be down is safe back in the cage.
Destiny calling is death with eager eyes. Cause Mr Brightside was not a optimist but a suicide.
Nothing wrong with buying ghost written lyrics but a bit off to call them your own.
