Katie Melua – When You Taught Me How To Dance lyrics
When you taught me how to dance
Years ago with misty eyes
Every step and silent glance
Every move a sweet surprise

Someone must have taught you well
To beguile and to entrance
For that night you cast your spell
And you taught me how to dance

Like reflections in a lake
I recall what went before
As I give, I'll learn to take
And to be alone no more

Other lights may light my way
I may even find romance
But I won't forget that night
When you taught me how to dance

Cold winds blow
But up on those hills you find me
And I know
You're walking right behind me

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago with misty eyes
Every step and silent glance
Every move a sweet surprise

Someone must have taught you well
To beguile and to entrance
For that night you cast your spell
And you taught me how to dance
And you taught me how to dance.

This song is all about finding love, not a person to love but love itself, the feeling of being in love. In this song its almost like "dance" is love and it shares its characteristics, like when you are taught how to dance you can't forget it, and the same for love, regardless of the person. This is reflected in the film "Miss Potter", even though norman has died she still knows what love feels like, which is why she feels she can marry william in the end.

Back when I was a teenager - over 70 years ago - rules of good behavour were much stricter than they are today. Thus, the local saturday night dance was the place to meet members of the opposite s** without appearing rude, or 'easy. '
And you not obly got to meett them - you got to hold them close!
Therefore, I feel that this lovely song has many simultaneous meanings - dance, romance, hope, excitement, disappintment and dispair. It certainly reflects the emotions of those shy teenagers to whom dancing provided a justification for approaching members of the opposite s**.

I belive this song is actually talking about dancing.
When you learn how to dance it really is incredible and there is a good chance of liking the person who taught you if they are your age. This happened to me actually, I started ballroom and this one guy started to teach me along with the class and he soon became my dance partner. I of course ended up having a bit of a crush on him, but now he's a good friend more than anything. Actually when he has a very special place in my life because dance can teach you more than just its techniqe. I have a boyfriend now "may even find romance" but he's still close to me :)
