Kansas – The Wall lyrics
I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little
More like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between,
All I am, and all that I would ever want be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking
Off the boundaries my spirit would erase

To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side,
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to see

Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me I know it well
The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me, I must tear down the Wall and let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
There is no loss

I believe it's about a man's struggle to live the christian life he knows god wants him to live. He fears he'll be to weak to live that way, afraid of missing out on the earthly things he desires. But in the end, he finds the strength god offers all of us. Shining true, and smiling back at all who wait to cross. There is no loss. He realizes god's way is the way, and he didn't miss anything.

Kansas, "Leftoverture" album is first ever bought, I was about 14, "The Wall" was the most intriguing to me and first song I ever memorized. Over the years, as I reflect on these lyrics, it's held different meanings to me. When I broke down the wall (self) & came to faith (surrendered) as a born again Christian in 1989, the best meaning had come to me! I gave up the world (surrendered all, gold and diamonds) and got eternal riches, way more, yet even more than that I got "Jesus". And I smile (back at all and the cross) when I share the gospel of Jesus Christ (and someone gets it). The true reality "Jesus is Lord" (He died on the Cross) there is no loss for those in Christ.
(Now a child of the King and heir to his kingdom)
    (Read revelations 21) John 3: 16-17.

I always heard it as a song in the first person of jesus. It is the point where he has to decide if he will go to the cross. "to pass beyond is what i seek, i fear that i may be too weak. " he became human and has lived as a human, but he is not truly human. The riches of this world, while casting a spell, are not for him. "the riches that i seek are waiting on the other side" = heaven. It is a song of the conflict of man with the understanding of god. God wins in the end, as he always does.

This song's meaning to me is not what Kerry Livgren intended. However it speaks to me this way. I'm a man in his late 40's, I've made many poor decisions in my life and now it has lead me to a wall, or a dead-end to be more precise. My spirit desires more, to soar beyong this meaningless and mundane life I'm stuck in now. As a believer in Yeshua the Messiah, I know that what seek is on the "other side" and to Pass Beyond is what I seek. The riches of this world "gold and diamonds" are now beyond my reach. To put it shortly, I'm ready for this Wall to be shattered so I can pass beyond. Bodily death of this world does not frighten me, only the pain of death. I'm ready to go for in this life I have there is no loss.

The beauty and magic of this song is that it can mean whatever you want it to mean. That meaning can be spiritual or religious, but it doesn't have to be. It can be about a life without meaning, a major life challenge that seem overwelming, or a major life goal that at the moment seems unattainable due to a major obstacle. It can have many different interpretations. The genius of the song is that in the end, there is a way!

I believe this could have another meaning than what the others have come up with. I could see these lyrics to mean that after choosing a physical universe life, one of material blessings yet weaknesses, that the writer realizes that this material universe path is not the path of the truth and of enlightenment, and that t has been blinding him & that it prevents him from actually seeing the truth, the truth of who he truly is and he decides to search to find his actual true self, as a spiritual being, not just a body, and that by following the path of spiritual enlightenment he will find harmony n all.

This song makes more sense being about enlightenment than Christianity .The part about few teaching the other side and the wall being you only make sense in enlightenment Many are born again few people ever claim to have achieved enlightenment and you are what stands in your path.Until you give up the concept of self thus tearing down the wall.

    I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
[ The world around me isn't real. My mind is playing tricks.]

The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
[ There's a decision to be made, and I don't know how to make it.]

And with each passing day I feel a little
More like something dear was lost
[ The longer I wait, the longer it eats away at me.]

It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between,
All I am, and all that I would ever want be
[ The choice is there before me. It's like an invisible wall.
    [ between who I am and I wish I was. ]

It's just a travesty, towering, marking
Off the boundaries my spirit would erase
[ I know it isn't real, but it looms over me, defining
[ what my heart would do away with ]

To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
[ I want to move passed this. But I can't do it, I'm not good enough. ]

And those are few who've seen it through to glimpse the other side,
[ Few are good enough. ]

The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
[ All I need, my promised land, is right there like a thing of beauty beckoning my heart's desire ]

The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
[ The beauty and artistry in my feelings are exquisite, and gut-wrenching ]

It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
[ The wall, the decision, defines who I am. ]

It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
    I want to see
[ It's a cruel joke, but I can't see passed it. The emotions are overwhelming.
[ Nothing exists but this barrier, this decision.
[ Please let me get beyond it.]

Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me I know it well
[ The easy seduction, the easy decision, are not my way ]

The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
[ What I want, the transformation I seek, is in that promised land ]

And though it's always been with me, I must tear down the Wall and let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
[ I've struggled all my life, but if I can break through this one barrier,
[ make this one sacrifice - because the energy and overwhelm of emotions makes it feel like
[ there is only thing remaining - if I can do this, then I'll have everything - joy, peace, transformation. ]

Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
[ I made it through. It's not what I thought. It's simply more of what came before,
[ but I can see now that what I had before was already a glorious thing. ]

    There is no loss
[ Just let go. You needn't sacrifice.]
