José González – Crosses lyrics
Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you
Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you
Returning nightmares only shadows
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now
Crosses all over, heavy on your shoulders
The sirens inside you waiting to step forward
Disturbing silence darkens your sight
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright

We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now
Crosses all over the boulevard
Crosses all over the boulevard
Crosses all over the boulevard
The streets outside your window overflooded
People staring they know you've been broken
Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces
Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright

Just heard Jose Gonzalez perform this song live with The String Theory in Portland, OR on Sunday night. I've always loved this song, but hearing it live and orchestrated was an amazing experience!! It was more upbeat than the solo version which is more haunting.

When I drive around my town, I can't help but notice the 'crosses' erected on freeways and highways to denote specific traffic deaths: drivers, passengers, bikers, pedestrians. Guilty (drunk drivers) and innocent. Young and old. Little cross shrines with flowers so that we won't forget these souls taken from us too soon. That is what the song means to me. Especially the line, "Crosses all over the boulevard."

I don't personally know these souls who have lost their lives (although I did know one). I know the circumstances of many from our local news, every one of them tragic. The line, "The streets outside your window over flooded," suggests to me a river of tears for the loss of the many souls denoted by the crosses. Whenever I drive by a cross, I bless the souls when I pass. And it reminds me of the line, "Cast some light and you'll be alright."

I could be wrong, but that's what this song means to me.

I had, at first thought this song was about Jesus etc, but now I listen to it and instead see it as perhaps a song about depression "Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you.
Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you"
Or then later more connotations ("The sirens inside you waiting to step forward") indicating an accident as many previously stated. Suicide perhaps?
"The streets outside your window overflooded.
People staring they know you've been broken.
Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces.
Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright"
I'm sure many of you know of the prejudice in the public mind, whether secretly or not of suicide. "Ignore them" Tell's me this is what Jose or whoever is saying these words as its all the person can do and also the line "We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now" seems to indicate that the narrator is once again telling them to let the problem whatever it is to run through, it takes time. As depression does indeed take time.
Sorry I'm fairly lazy when it comes to explaining myself, but I love this song so much I just thought I'd share in brief what I picked up. Not that anyone other than the musicians meaning matters that much as its generally such a subjective topic anyway.
