John Mayer – Gravity lyrics
Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh I'll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Oh Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh twice as much aint twice as good
And can't sustain like a one half could
It's wanting more
That's gonna send me to my knees
(Repeat)

Oh gravity, stay the hell away from me
Oh gravity, has taken better men than me how can that be?

Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where, keep me where the light is

I think anything hit the nail on the head.
Gravity is the "feeling". Any man would love to have two women (and I don't mean in bed kind of way) to love and have them love him. He's saying his human nature to want two lovers is working against a faithful relationship. When he says "I'll never know what makes this man... dream of ways to throw it all away" he means that he has a perfect life with his current love now, but for some reason wants to throw that love away to have both.
I think "keep me where the light is" is a statement to say "I've decided to stay with the original love and I'd rather take the path that I can see what's ahead of me instead of taking a blind chance".

This song is a good soul felt expression about life. Aging is a delicate and beautiful thing but it don't always end up how we plan or dream. We get disappointed in love, in friends and family, and in ourselves. Sometimes we want to be more than what we are. Be a better person, wish we had lived a better life, go back and change mistakes even, but 'gravity' keeps us where we are, with who we are and with what we have. Sometime its despairing to live and to love and we want to run away. Love more than anything can rip a person to pieces and leave them empty when its over. But we can't get away from it. Its life! The wheel keeps turnin through the good and the bad.

I don't know, but seems to me that this song is about temptation. Specifically, temptation to adultery. If you look at the first "verse", he clearly states that he is currently in a loving relationship, yet is feeling temptation. In the refrain he names that temptation "Gravity". He then more explicitly explains that temptation in the next verse, "Oh twice as much ain't twice as good . . .", but also his understanding that giving in won't make his life richer.
Small number of lyrics, excellent moral, great song!

I feel its about the struggle between what we know is good for us (children, a loving spouse, being kind to others, faith in a higher power, helping those less fortunate, defending the weak, meekness, temperance, love, patience) and other things (drugs, alcohol, materialism, selfishness, gluttony, s** at the expense of others) like New York Minute by the Eagles. Some will work for years and blow it all in a bad weekend.

I think this song represents the cycle of life. As of right now life is that of a young person who realizes that one day he and the people of his generation will be facing the inevitable occurrence of aging. And "Gravity" refers to the sense that life sometimes will bring you down thus making you age further. When he says "just keep me where the light is" he means take the day as it comes and don't give up on yourself.

I think this song is about staying true to yourself. Keeping in the light. He only talks about love once, and he's leaving it. To go on the road. Gravity however weighs you down, and makes it so you can't fly to the dreams and aspirations you once had. "it's taken better men" who have fallen along the way. Like Jimmy Hendrix, or srv. So. The reality of life is gravity, working to break your dreams. So live in the light, in order to keep a strong eye on what you truely are and what you truely believe. No matter how crazy your life gets. (as I'm sure John Mayer's life is quite hecktic).

My meaning of this song is that he's having a hard time in life and is just trying to get himself back on his feet wether it's a girl he's having a hard time about, or if it's family. Either or. For me when I hear this song it's family hard times. When he says "just keep me where the light is" I think he's refering to the brighter (happier) times in life. He just wants everything to be okay. .
    But that's just what I think. .: S. Lol.

I love this song, its haunting but sooo smooth, so this is my take on its meaning:.
Gravity is working against me â€" we're men we (most men) love being loved by women, we fantasise about it; we cheat on our.
wives/partners so his conscious is bringing him back down to earth to reality, making him think about.
what he is doing â€" gravity is his conscious.
Oh i'll never know what makes this man.
With all the love that his heart can stand.
Dream of ways to throw it all away - he's cheating on his wife/partner â€" he gets all the love he would ever need from her.
yet he still dreams/fantasises about other women, ie. How to mess up the good.
    Thing he already has.
Twice as much aint twice as good.
And can't sustain like one half could
Its wanting more that's gonna set me to me knees â€" having two women (or more) in two or more relationships, is no better than.
getting love from one good woman (wife/partner), it's going to all end in tears.
    and regrets.

Day to day life and temptations work against us to bring us down every single day we are on the planet. Making the right decisions is key. That's why he says "what makes a man dream of ways to throw it all away" if we don't fight gravity (the weight of the world) pulling us down and if we don't stay in the light, it will get us. "it's taken better men than me... How can that be" if we don't stay where the light is, the cares of the world will surely take us down.

To me this song represents falling in and out of love. The great Einstien said don't blame gravity for falling in love. I think the falling part is what is referred to as gravity. I believe that it's about falling in love with someone against your will, even though you are already with someone else; that you may even still love. I think he is saddened by this because he wants to be with this new lover but knows that he can't.

Blob. I'll say that I have voted some of your meanings down. But definitely not all. I only vote the redundant and ridiculous ones. You do the same to me, and to others. I've noticed that a lot yours fluctuate, so I know I'm not the only one voting you down. As far as following you. I laugh at your accusations! You follow everyone around. You watch my comments closely as well as Toxic's. I've noticed a few other, but I don't remember their names. You vote all mine down. Even my legitimate meanings.
Have you even ever heard of The Showdown? I remember a comment on one of their songs and you said "This is their greatest song". Yea whatever. Cannibal Corpse?! You have no clue of who they are.
I'll stop voting you down if you stop putting up meaningless posts. I negative anyone's post that is either not related to the subject or plain out stupid.
Btw, I've voted a few of yours positive. And kudos to you for those particular posts.

He is confused between two lovers, that's why he says his heart has all love he can stand and he is dreaming about the ways to throw it all away. But come on! Everybody knows that we can't be in love with two persons at the same time, sometimes you just keep a good memory of one and you really love the other one. He has to give up on the memory and take the chance for his real love! For once.

This song is about break ups, and that feeling you get when you see the other person is doing good and your not. And how that feeling makes you feel " the weight on your shoulders is like gravity" his relationship with the girl wasn't a good one and he wanted to end it but he still loves her. He states "can't sustain like a one half could
It's wanting more That's gonna send me to my knees" he's saying that she can sustain the break up (one half could) and it's wanting more, (wanting her back) that's bringing him to his knees. He's stating he wants to be away from it and gravity(the feelings) is working against him. And he just wants to be away from it.

In my eyes, gravity is used as a metaphor to symbolize life. Life is pushing against him. Life wants to bring him down. He says "gravity has taken better men than me" saying life has been able to cheat "smarter" people, and succeeded. That's why he says, "how could this be? " he compares life to gravity because they are both invisible, both always there, and both can change your relationship with earth. It' a beautiful song, really.

It is about weight management. We all love food. Many times in excess. Don’t try to read too much into it
    ;).

Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins and kills many good people. I am now curious if JM ever struggled with his weight or someone close to him did. By his appearance he does not look like weight is an issue for him.

JM is awesome and I believe it is about the music more than the lyrics anyway. This song is excellent and so soothing.

This song is definitely about getting high, his struggling addiction, and his fear of overdosing. "Twice as much ain't twice as good, and can't sustain like one half could"... The best clue that it's actually about addiction and fear is the line "Gravity has taken better men than me." The end of the song where he's pleading "Just keep me where the light is" is about the battle to not slip further into the darkness of addiction and consequently slip away.

Hey blob. I notice you post a lot. But hardly any of the posts have any relation to the song. They are all something like "(artist) is the greatest and I like (song)". I understand you want to make a lot of posts, and that's fine. But you don't like every lyric that's out there. I honestly don't think you've heard any of it (except for the radio stuff).
Post what you feel. Post your feelings and definition of the song. That's what this is about.

I think and feel john is sharing with us that he has found the light and gravity is where we come to search for the light. Planet earth is bound by gravity and is part of the fall. Our nature here is always a constant struggle to keep our love and going on his knees is symbolic of surrendering. Stay in the light, is his message to mankind, darkness is lurking everywhere and gravity pulls us down into despair if one does not find the light.

I thought it was about getting high. But that might have been one of the redundant or ridiculous meanings. I thought gravity ws the world, or society's perception of it. The materialism ("twice as much aint twice as good") and shallow love ("all the love that his heart can stand") he sees everywhere arond him is bringing him down, and he wants to get away from that, or even better, to defeat it. And how do you defeat gravity? By going up, getting high. When he says "Keep me where the Light is," he's talking about the sun - the highest you can get. That's where he wants to stay to forget the world and it woes.

Mmm. Its so amazing reading Johns lyrics, hes so complex, but that's why we love him I guess, anyway, I think on the whole, its about helpless feelings of depression, putting him in a place where he loses something precious, as a result of his state of mind, and melancholy, but also about the confusion of the whole 'why is the grass always greener on the other side ' thing?
Also too, maybe about how daunting it is to actually be totally happy, and not finding solace and contentment in that, but how being in a good place with everything in life, has adverse affects on him, like its scary to have everything you want, because theres nothing else left to wish for?
Its amazing how thers a relatively small quantity of lyrics, yet they are open to such wide interpretation! John is a godamn genius, god bless him for writing such amazing material.

It's clearly about how he has a tendency towards self destruction. He has "all the love his heart can stand", but he's ruining it for himself. The second verse is about how though he has all that he could want (fame, money, women), it's no good, and there's a void he can't fill, that's bringing him down. These forces (his self destruction and the "richness" he's missing in life) are characterized as gravity.
