Jethro Tull – Jack-In-The-Green lyrics
Have you seen Jack-In-The-Green?
With his long tail hanging down.
He sits quietly under every tree ---
In the folds of his velvet gown.
He drinks from the empty acorn cup
The dew that dawn sweetly bestows.
And taps his cane upon the ground ---
Signals the snowdrops it's time to grow.

It's no fun being Jack-In-The-Green ---
No place to dance, no time for song.
He wears the colours of the summer soldier ---
Carries the green flag all the winter long.

Jack, do you never sleep ---
Does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will these changing times,
Motorways, powerlines,
Keep us apart?
Well, I don't think so ---
I saw some grass growing through the pavements today.

The rowan, the oak and the holly tree
Are the charges left for you to groom.
Each blade of grass whispers Jack-In-The-Green.
Oh Jack, please help me through my winter's night.
And we are the berries on the holly tree.
Oh, the mistlethrush is coming.
Jack, put out the light.

That's a very much likely story. Despite all, it's the folklore, and one should in no way disparage the experince of the past generations. They were not, to say the least of it, less clever than we are here now - the nature of man remains unchanged in its core in ages as well as the essence of nature itself does. Even nowadays, people in the country have the keener and sharper eye in following the movements of their environment closely. Well, about the song. Yes, this all is exactly about it. You may trust my words, or conversely, but they say that the forest proper is a living being, the complex system much more intricate than, for instance, the human organism (computers, which are often chosen as a standard for such comparison, do not have even the slightest chance to equal those two in complexity). And what do we, hewmans, know about this tremendous universe, how do we relate to it and its denizens? We, in our so to speak material world, are somehow not eager to support, some of us even to restore our natural connexion with the World of the only one side of which Mr. Anderson kindly reminded us in this beautiful song. How does he manage to execute pearls like this, where does he see all those images and hear so heavenly tunes? I wonder. But I suspect he doesn't know it either.
