The way I interpret this song is that the singer is talking to this other person, be it a lover or a friend or a family member, just somebody they care about greatly, and they are stuck at an in between. This other person doesn't want to accept love but still wants to keep the singer around. "I've been trying to give you some space But you won't let me, won't let me" However, they still cling to the singer, wanting to keep him around without deep feelings of love. What the singer is saying is that they want to love this person with what they have but if said person won't accept the love, then the singer wants to be allowed to go and move on. He refuses to be stuck in this in between part that they are in, wanting to go one way or the other. "Don't feed the solace within you And allow it to grow" The singer is telling this person not to feed the sadness that they have been taking comfort in through not accepting love, for it won't lead anywhere good. "I've been trying to save you the trouble" The singer has been trying to pull away so that this person won't have to do so, but they cling away and won't let him.

To me this song is all about not letting yourself be happy; effectively you are the 'gap' between happiness and sadness. To make yourself feel whole all you have to do is choose the side: be happy or be sad. It's that simple! Don't let yourself be ruled by negativity (as fear will be your downfall) and let yourself take The Love You're Given.

This song can be sang by him to the one he loves, or by the one he loves to him. So it might/should be directed to those who are stuck with someone who doesn't love them as they love the other person. The chorus says it all:
"I've been trying to give you my love
I've been trying to give you some space
I've been trying to save you the trouble
I've been trying to give you my love"
But you won't let me... It says it all, stop fooling yourself and accept the love you're given, which might not be the one you want, but is the one given to you.
In my case she loves me, she gives me space and wants to save me from the trouble of loving her, the way I do, cause although she doesn't/can't love me as her partner, I'll always be her ex lover/dear friend. ohhh shit.
