Florence + The Machine – Spectrum lyrics
When we first came here,
We were cold and we were clear,
With no colours on our skin,
We were light and paper-thin.

And when we first came here,
We were cold and we were clear,
With no colours on our skin,
'Till you let the spectrum in.

Say my name,
And every colour illuminates,
We are shining,
And we'll never be afraid again.

Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!
Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!

And when we come for you,
We'll be dressed up all in blue,
With the ocean in our arms,
Kissing eyes and kissing palms.

And when it's time to pray,
We'll be dressed up all in grey,
With metal on our tongues,
And silver in our lungs.

Say my name,
And every colour illuminates,
We are shining,
And we'll never be afraid again.

Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!
Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!

And when we come back we'll be dressed in black!
And you'll scream our names aloud!
And we won't eat and we won't sleep!
We'll drag bodies from their graves!

So say my name,
And every colour illuminates,
And we are shining,
And we'll never be afraid again,
Say my name,
As every colour illuminates.

Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!
Say my name!
As every colour illuminates!
We are shining!
And we'll never be afraid again!

Say my name!
We are shining!
Say my name!
Say my name!
And we'll never be afraid again!

I think its about life. When we came into thsi world we had no religious/racial/ethical/political/pregidist views, we did support and teams or follow any leaders, we had no understanding of feelings such as embarrassment/fear/shame etc
we were totally clear and free of anything until life began. We came into this world with no weith on our shoulders and as life began we were painted with certain colours. The colours are everything you learn, see, know and experience in life! They are everything you collct on your journey that stay with you.

The blue is finding your soul mate new or quite new celebrate marriage.
The grey is the hell that happens in all lives who live to see their parents die and grow old together themselves metal being the grit it takes to go through something as difficult as that.
And black facing your own death but being together till the end - dragging the bodies of your past selves into the light one more time endlessly till death do we part.
    I love you adrian.

For florence - who knows? It's an amazing song.
For me - when god calls your name, your life, which was shallow, thin and fragile - changes. Everything you see changes. You see the full spectrum of this creation and each person shines in different ways. Prejudice falls from your eyes. With god, fear of this mortal world can be banished. Kissing eyes can be bringing real sight to the 'blind' as jesus did. Kissing palms is healing and forgiving. Metal on our tounges could be about the book of revelation and judgement - particularly because it says 'when we come for you'. Next verse with 'dragging bodies from their graves' fits with this too. Joy and glory of ressurection. It may be an unpopular interpretation to hear for those fixed in the worldly rat-race and those who find religion too challenging personally right now - but read those lyrics again with an open mind and consider the possibilities. Is it time to hear your name being called and allow that spectrum in? Or is it just a good dance track with randomly selected lyrics? You decide.

I think this song is about her meteoric rise to fame. She says 'when we first came here we were cold and we were clear' when she started out as an artist she wasn't well noticed or known. Then she says 'we are shining and we will never be afraid again' which means she is famous, nothing can faze her. Her reference to 'we won't eat and we won't sleep we'll drag bodies from their graves could be her wild partying that we so often hear about.

I think I finally understand the meaning of this song! In my opinion the song it's actually very spiritual, just like florence welch herself. Look up on the internet what "crystal children" and "the new world" are. Perhaps she's a crystal child herself. These people have always been vulnerable and feeling misunderstood. They have a certain purpose on earth to turn back the cruel world we created into a loveable world. I think the spectrum and colours refer to the symbolic crystal (crystal children) and the growing process of finding out that your born sensitivity also has very meaningfull sites and you will finally be able to 'let the spectrum in' and shine and make the world a better place.

You know I've said this a few times but this is one of my favourite songs that florence sings and honestly in this song. You don't need a meaning! The only meaning you need is music! It's a song that makes you want to jump up and down and scream the words! I was at concert in the o2 arena in dublin and that songs the people sitting on front of me nearly left! It's a moving song at the chorus just go with it! Let loose! Let loose your spectrum!
The spectrum who just happened to die when it heard this song!
No meanings needed! Music that's the real meaning!

This is such a beautiful and deep song, talking of when the world started and we were nothing, as we knew nothing. Then we developed as people, learning about the world and took in everything we could. We let the spectrum in, and every colour of the world, and every colour in us illuminates. There's another possible meaning, which is that florence welch is singing this song to her lover, where when he says her name, she feels alive and all her colours illuminate - she's happy. She will never go back, she's in love.

The song starts from birth when everyone is pure ans not influenced by others. Then the song talks about teen ages when you start to see things different and you are colored by others or smudged by blue. Then when its time to flee is talking about midlife crisis times when you kniw death is coming but you ignore it or flee from the truth. And lungs of silvr is respondin to you believe your words are important. Then when e come back in black is talking about death is when you are old and tou know death is coming and "drag bodies from graves" is talking about how you hink of people who have already died. And the we wont eat talks about howif you are on lifesupport dying slowly.
