Florence + The Machine – Seven Devils lyrics
Holy water cannot help you now
A thousand armies couldn't keep me out
I don't want your money
I don't want your crown
See I've come to burn
Your kingdom down

Holy water cannot help you now
See I've come to burn your kingdom down
And no rivers and no lakes, can put the fire out
I'm gonna raise the stakes; I'm gonna smoke you out

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in my house
See they were there when I woke up this morning
I'll be dead before the day is done

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning,
And I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done

And now all your love will be exorcised
And we will find your saints to be canonized
And it's an even sum
It's a melody
It's a battle cry
It's a symphony

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in my house
See, they were there when I woke up this morning
And I'll be dead before the day is done

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning,
And I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done
Before the day is done
Before the day is done

They can keep me alive
'Til I tear the walls
'Til I slave your hearts
And they take your souls
And what have we done?
Can it be undone?
In the evil's heart
In the evil's soul

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning
I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done

Florence welch said she got this idea of seven devils from a quote in a book called "if he hollers let him go" by chester himes. The quote was "i woke up with seven devils in me. " she said she liked the quote and just wrote her song. "
I personally doubt that this is the wholly true given the esoteric content of her music, but whatever she may have had in mind while writing this song, my personal interpretation remains the same. I listen to this song and I hear a tragedy. She has been betrayed by her loved one(s) and now she seeks vindication. Her life is forfeit either by cruel fate or by design(though if by design, then whose? Her's or another's?). Whatever wrongs have been done her are irreparable and she is out for blood. No one and nothing will stop her. It's a song of fate.

I'm tired of everybody saying illuminati this, illuminati that. Before the illuminati started trending as a topic religious people gave their opinions, now they can't finish without saying 'entertainment' and 'illuminati'. I just wonder why you still go ahead and download her songs when its 'illuminati' aren't we jolly hypocrites? Or this is just too-good-be-ignored illuminati entertainment. I laugh y'all. Anyway lets focus on the song, nice song but the instrumental wasn't as good as I wanted.

I might be the only one thinking this but for me it's about the people controlling the world. The evil often portrayed as the illuminate, the devil worshipers, the elite etc. She says I don't want your money, I don't want your crown (think of winning the oscars or making the cover of a magazine). "i've come to burn your kingdom down", she is fighting against the elite who control society, hollywood, the papers etc. "and they take your souls, what have we done". She is referring to us as a people not doing anything to fight against tyranny. We are like sheep, living our lives around "evil". "seven devils (seven sins) all around you". Basically it's all around us and we are like dead people, barely living our lives from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed. "and what have we done, can it be undone? ". We just let it happen, is it too late to make change? I could go on and on. This is just my interpretation so I might be wrong but this sounds right to me. There are a lot of artist talking about the devil as the secret societies who are well known to have infiltrated every aspect of our lives.

Lol I like how this song is maken people think. But in truth the sins are in us, the person in the song is rejecting reason. She's beyond her limits and basiclly wants the other person to burn. Be in pain like she is. It doesn't matter to her. Because she knows she's already dead. And she doesn't want to be that way. But she doesn't know how to let go of the anger/sadness/chaos that caused her to that point. Either way good song.

It means she is in the illuminati and she has sold her soul to the devil just like jay z lady gaga rhianna, all those people. She has sold it for money and fame, and now she reps the devil, notice how in her videos she shows illuminati signs and symbols (covering her eye, make up on just one eye, song about girl with one eye) the main symbol of illuminati is the "all seeing eye" within the pyramid. So she is saying she is dead when she woke up this morning and dead when the day is done, basically because she has no soul she is basically now just a corpse, soulless and life less. Weather it is symbolic or true. You be the judge of it. Make yourself aware. Music these days goes beyond the art form. Its not dark arts mixed with politics and world domination. Look into it, research, make yourself aware!

This song is about seven devils. When a person is been haunted by demons and spirits the priest will come and do an. Exersim but if the. Priest or person doing it is not a true follwer of. God he. Will not have the power to do ao. When they do the exersim they have to give a place for the spirit demon to go. If not then the spirt demon will travel and find somwere to go but of they do not find somewere else to go they will go back to you. And they will bring seven other demons worse than them. That is were the term seven devils comes from. If you do not believe me look it up, its in the bible. People need to know that god is the only savior. The devil will do everything in his power to bring you down and make your life. Misrable. Its happening now florences music is about it. Her song shake. Him off is about getting rid of the devil getting rid of the bad in your life. And she states and its hard to dance with the devil on ur back so shake him off. You may think I'm crazy but ita peoples ignorance that its letting him win and will kill us all. Do your own research for ur selfs. Just search the illuminati which is a satonic group that is already rulling the mojority of the world.

It means that she is so full of anger and the need to seek revenge that she will not stop at any cost until her enemy is defeated in the worst way possible. She sees this retribution as a beautiful thing. It evens her score of pain, 1 to 1. She will go to sleep at night and wake up every morning with this fire-like anger until her mission is accomplished.

    "crown" instead of "crowd"
"seven devils all around me" on the first round of the chorus, instead of "seven devils all around *you*"
It definitely could be "melody" but I keep hearing "liberty" I really don't know for sure.
And now for the hard part:.
    "then they keep it up.
    Tear right through the walls.
    'til they change your hearts.
    And they tame your souls.
    For what has been done.
    Cannot be undone".
    That's definitely what I hear.
Now for the meaning. For me, this song is about depression over unrequited love. Or depression in general. The seven devils are the demons that you have inside from past wrongdoings. Holy water cannot help you if you let them take over. Because that boy doesn't love her, they are taking over her, and she's going to make him pay for not loving her. She'll destroy his reputation, riches, and popularity (see I had to burn your kingdom down/ I don't want your crown) and then she will kill him ("it's an even sum, it's a melody, it's a battle cry, it's a symphony. " this whole verse is the devils convincing her that he deserves to be killed). Since those seven devils have finished what they came to do, they will sit back and watch as she realizes what she's done. The last verse after "before the day is done" is the girl realizing what she has done ("for what has been done cannot be undone"), and seeing her devils for the first time. Then she kills herself at the end of the song. Yet she was already dead that morning from the depression that plagued her. In short, it's the whole "if i can't have you, then nobody can" mentality.
Man, this song is depressing, but so beautiful. This is all my personal opinion of course, but if you listen very closely to this song, you'll hear what I hear. :).

The song, I think, is meant for an indivisual's own interpretation based on his/her's own personality and life experiences. Open interpretation, that is. This song could be dissected and reasembled to a different tune a plethora of ways. I can be a literal person, so my thoughts will most likely be that of common opinion. I, myself, think the seven devils refer to the seven deadly sins. The kingdom, I can only guess, is referring to one's own empire built around lies and or deceit (politicians, anyone?). Death is referring to living a half-life filled with depression and guilt. Some controversy over the actual lyrcs make me a bit leery to voice this thought, as I have seen some variations in the less clear parts of the song, but I can only imagine the walls being of the emotional kind that were built from the lies and sins, meant to block out or muffle any burdening guilt. From my analysis, the tearing of the mentioned walls is the realization and discontinued denial or ignorance of what is being done. Remorse is expressed, but the collateral damage and direct hits were aready summing up to be beyond redemption. I will not express any opinion on the lyrics before 'and it's an even sum', because there are too many inconsistancies between these lyrics and other sites I've been on. Anyway, just thought I'd put in my two cents.

I hear "hold your world" insted of "holly water" and "arms and my knees could's keep me up" insted of "a thousand armies couldn't keep me out" and "i'm gonna rais the stage" insted of "i'm gona rais the stakes" and "i don't want your money i don't want your crown" insted of "i don't want you money i don't want your crowd" and when she forst said seven devils "seven devils all around me seven devils in my house see they were there when i woke up this morning and i'll me dead before the day is done seven devils all around you seven devils in your house see i was dead when i woke up this morning and i'll be dead before the day is done"

I heard it in the trailer for game of thrones and it clearly references that, as in of human nature, wars never end, but people do die before the end. The end can be represented as the end of times or the definite conclusion of a situation or struggle. In game of thrones, as of season 2, the death of the main character causes for peace to be shattered and kingdoms to face each other until one is left standing. But in the end, none of the kingdoms seems likely to come victorious as they're haunted by the revenge and karma of others who've sworn certain vendetta on them. And basically, everybody will die before the matter is resolved, nobody is safe from their own sins, and therefore are blinded by the consequences of their actions.

Matthew 12: 43-45 - new international version (niv).
43 "when an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 then it says, 'i will return to the house i left. ' when it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation. "

The song is about the 7 deadly sins and how they effect our lives. 7 devils all around you. I was dead when I woke up this morning and i'll be dead the before the day is done. Therefore you can see that the sins have a negative effect on you. She is saying that they will kill you and holy water would have no effect on your salvation. "what have we done can it be undone? " this symbolises the loss of salvation. You cannot take undo an action only seek to fix it.

No one said she is not talented. She has a great singing voice. Does that mean everything is what it seems? Ever hear of subliminal messaging? Propaganda? Brain washing? You know that stuff also exists. Don't take everything for face value. You should look into it, open up ur mind, do some research start looking into it seriously, google, YouTube. That will start you off. Eventually you will be able to see stuff in a different way once you have done some research.

I think it symbolizes a relationship that ended poorly and one tries to get revenge on the other. But once they come close to getting it, they realize what they were about to do, and now they can't stop it. The "see i was dead when i woke up this morning," and "i'll be dead before the day is done," also symbolize that the person feels like their lost and broken; dead.

I think that the devils are somehow trying to work with her that's why she made the song "shake i out" and now thi one which is so obvious! This devil is tying to control her! I don't know what's their love and exorcised that's realeasing an evil spirit and if she doesn't realease him soon she will have trouble "and ill be dead before the day is done" "they can keep me alive" are the devils but she can't listen to them she ha to refuse it or she would have trouble. "and they take your souls" she is obviously talking about the devils and maybe they took her soul and she released the evil spirit. "and what have we done? Can it be undone? In the evil's heart in the evil's soul" what they "devils" have done "contolled her" can it be undone "because they have to regret it cause she realeasd the devils "seven deadly sins" in the evil's heart in the evil's soul "the devils".
