Florence + The Machine – Howl lyrics
If you could only see the beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
Screaming in the dark, I howl when we're apart
Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart

My fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in
You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl
My fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in
You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to

Howl, howl
Howl, howl

Now there's no holding back, I'm making to attack
My blood is singing with your voice, I want to pour it out
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground

Like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins
I want to find you, tear out all of your tenderness

And howl, howl
Howl, howl

Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers
Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters
Hunters, hunters, hunters
Hunters, hunters, hunters

The fabric of your flesh, pure as a wedding dress
Until I wrap myself inside your arms I cannot rest
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground

And howl

Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers
Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters

A man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night
May still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright

If you could only see the beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground

Passionate love making. The 'howl' is the passionate moan.
"be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers.
Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters.
    Hunters, hunters, hunters.
    Hunters, hunters, hunters".
The progression of that passion. This happens when a child is sheltered from sexuality. The initial reaction between two young lovers it tentative, and innocent. The closer the connection, the more passionate and possessive that love becomes (especially new, young love, or first love). It results into this animalistic need to be as close as possible, to posses all of that person. Wanting to get as much of the delicious love they've gotten the taste of. Like an insatiable child to sugar.
A direct story would be a religious girl, taught to avoid the passion of this love, but then succumbs to it, then is addicted to it.
"if you could only see the beast you've made of me(he taught her passion).
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free(she couldn't help but to let go of her religious teaching for his).
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound (her religious beliefs about s** are gone.)
I hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground (now that she's hooked to his passion-s**- she's tainted, bloody. Where he resides is her new sacred, or hollowed, ground. That's where she searches, hunts, for him. "

Love. It enters you and posesses you. No matter how much you deny yourself, love wont go away; there is no cure. And when you accept it, once you hold it in your grasp, it becomes a curse.
It drives you mad. You need to be with that person, you're constantly thinking about them and only wish to be in their arms. You're emotions drive you to the extreme; you'd do anything to find them, be with them, see them. It burns into an animalistic desire/instinct.
And you no longer recognize yourself.

I personally think that the song is about how love changes you. She says, "be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers/ starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters. " love can change you into a beast, can change the nature of your relationship with a person. Possessiveness is often characterized as animalistic, and she wants to possess his beating heart. She wants him to know what love for him does to her. It turns her into something she can't recognize, a beast in the night howling at the moon.

It's about how a love can make a person be free and love with a lot of passion, that she want every part of him with lust and possesives thoughts but when time continue, both the passion and the lust is starting to becoming more strong and possesive than before, always wanting to be with that person, and wanting somthing more and rude like marking him as her own, and to be marked.
    Like the wolves.

The song is not about a break up, nor about love, well, not exactly, though marriage is mentioned. I didn't get the impression the two were in an actual relationship. Maybe the aftermath from longing for a significant amount of time, and led to a psycho obsession. Perhaps the first person has chosen this moment to rid all insecurities, and finally pursue what is desired. It threatens extreme, and dangerous behavior. Regardless, the song is very powerful, and flo rocks it.

I would say the song is about two people, possibly a couple, who are so deeply in love with each other that one has become delirious with their love and it is becoming dark and twisted. They become so obsessed with their partner that they become a metaphorical 'hunter', and feel as if a curse has been put on them: this curse being love. Anyone who has ever fallen deeply in love will relate to the depressing beauty of this song, and comprehend the curse.

My take on the song is that this is a love(and rejection?), it turns her into this monster. "my fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in" is just saying she doesn't to wait for you to give her access to your heart. She's rushing it and trying to force herself into it. She's so tired of this pining and she's broken the ropes the bind. She wants to be in your arms and there's nothing to stop the hunt anymore. That's my take anyways (also "she" is singer and "you" is person b).

She's using the werewolf image to compare to how she feels when she's in love. It's made her a 'beast' so to speak, lusting after him. She turned it into a cool werewolf story. And the part where she says "i drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart. My fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in. " might sound a little creepy and gross but it's like she's trying to find the key to his heart except she's a beast so she's trying to tear her way in to his heart. I like when she says "be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers, it starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters. " it further proves that she is talking about making love but she hides that fact by putting 'curse' into it which ties it back to the werewolf theme. The part where she says "the saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound. " refers to the fact that she knows she probably shouldn't give in to the lust but "the ropes have been unbound" and she can't contain the 'beast' once it's released. She is a genius with words.

To whoever says this brilliant song is about s**, you are fully wrong, I have known all of the lyrics to it since I was 9, and drove my mother insane by playing it over and over again, if you actually read the lyrics then you will know, it says "a man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night may still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright! " so there!

Isn't this song basically one big metaphor for wanting to have s**? It my just be me being dirty minded but "starts so soft and sweet and turns them into hunters" "until i wrap myself inside your arms i cannot rest" "the beast you made of me" it just sounds like shes really horny lol and when people have s** there is a lot of "howling" involved. Sorry to dirty the song up and everything lol.
