Elton John – Easier To Walk Away lyrics
Every time you turn around, you wear another face
Every time I look away, I find a hiding place
If you knew me like you knew him, you would know just how I feel
Slipping through somebody's fingers, falling under someone's wheels

It's easier to walk away, better off to face the facts
When love holds you up for ransom, walk away and don't look back

Never seen you looking back through smiling eyes and tears
Never knew you holding on to memories and fears
Just release me I can't take it, can't you see a change has come
Strangled by infatuation, buried under someone's thumb

It's easier to walk away, better off to face the facts
When love holds you up for ransom, walk away and don't look back
It's easier to walk away cover and fade to black
When love scars and leaves you branded, walk away and don't look back

Every time you turn around, you wear another face
Every time I look away find a hiding place

It's easier to walk away, better off to face the facts
When love holds you up for ransom, walk away and don't look back, yeah
It's easier to walk away, better off to face the facts
When love holds you up for ransom, walk away and don't look back

I think the song is about someone preparing to leave a narcissistic and abusive partner.

The first verse suggests that the partner is unstable - a Jekyll and Hyde character. The singer has started to prefer to be away from his partner as much as possible to escape their abuse. Slipping through somebody's fingers refers to the singer detaching emotionally from his partner due to the abuse. Falling under someone's wheels describes the feeling of being crushed repeatedly by his partner's rages.

The chorus is the singer waking up to his predicament and persuading himself that leaving is the right thing to do.

The second verse suggests the singer's partner has strangely shallow feelings of attachment - no ability to have fond memories of anyone or anything. It is this and the partner's unstable character that indicate that the partner is a narcissist. The singer then tells their partner that they've had enough, that they are not going to continue being trapped by their infatuation in this abusive relationship.

The repetition in the chorus is the singer convincing himself repeatedly to stay strong and leave in spite of his misgivings because walking away is painful, but ultimately less painful than staying.
