Ellie Goulding – Your Song lyrics
It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words

How wonderful life is now you're in the world

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a girl who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

While this vocalist, Ellie Goulding, may have selected it based on some sort of identification with its lyrics, she did not write it. It was actually written by English lyricist, Bernie Taupin, for musician, Elton John. Taupin wrote the lyrics as the verbal fumblings of first love. From that standpoint, it's something that most people can identify with... And can apply to a variety of first-love situations, such as a first child. It is a melodramatic narrative style that Allmusic considers to come across as "effective and sweet."

The song was first released on Elton John's self-titled second album in 1970. It has since been recorded by other artists and was also featured on the soundtrack of the movie, Moulin Rouge.

I see that this song is from a mother to her newborn child. She describes that these feeling are new to her and she's also telling her child that she neither has much money to buy a big house for them to live in, nor does she remember things that other people would remember. She asks for her child's forgiveness of her lack of remembrance but she states that although she does not remember if their eyes are green or blue, she does truly believe that their eyes are the sweetest she's ever seen. Since she cannot give her child much, she's written this song for them of how wonderful life is now they're in the world. And in the end, love is the greatest gift one can give.
