David Gray – Babylon lyrics

Friday night I'm going nowhere
All the lights are changing green to red
Turning over tv stations
Situations running through my head
Well looking back through time
You know it's clear that I've been blind
I've been a fool
To open up my heart
To all that jealousy, that bitterness, that ridicule

Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream
Only wish that you were here
You know I'm seeing it so clear
I've been afraid
Show you how I really feel
Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made

If you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Babylon, Babylon, Babylon

Sunday all the lights of London
Shining, Sky is fading red to blue
I'm kicking through the Autumn leaves
And wondering where it is you might be going to
Turning back for home
You know I'm feeling so alone
I can't believe
Climbing on the stair
I turn around to see you smiling there
In front of me

If you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Babylon, Babylon, Babylon, Babylon, Babylon

Babylon is really babble-on, as in "i don't really know what to say at this part of the song, so i will just babble-on".
I really wish I knew the real meaning of babylon. It's one of my all time favorites. Especially when performed by a guy named gill torres who performs weekly at luau larry's on catalina island (off the coast of long beach, ca). David gray should hear him sing it. No one does is better!

I go back in the Bible where the tower of Babel was being built, when God confused the languages. And ever since it has been next to impossible for humans to understand one another. So here is a couple struggling to communicate, until a moment when the man at least, has expressed his faults, and found a place of desperate need for his Love, and miraculously she is right there in front of him.

So, this one is about regret over acting like a jerk, full of jealousy, etc. That caused a break up (green - go to red - stop). Then later, after getting meds (perhaps for bipolar disorder) shown through "chemicals running through his bloodstream" he is now thinking clearly (red to green) but now wishing the girl was there to experience it with him but unable to tell her. Finally, in the last verse, she shows up on the doorstep at the end of a great evening in london town!

I have tried to reseach babylon and found it is both a mythical and real place that is beautiful but elusive. David grey is my new favorite artist, ranking up there with eric clapton, quincy jones and paul simon. I am captivated by david, both his voice and music. I feel like he is telling me a story of longing and hoping for that magic place. That's the best I can do, but I love the album more than anything.

Well. I am guessing that he is talking about a man who has been so in love, but that was open to all the gossip around their relationship that probably was the reason for their breaking up (open up for all that jealousy). For this guy, his momentary lapse of reason starts on a friday since in most cases in our society the life begings on fridays (party any one), however he is so down for not having her that he is ready to embrace drugs or at least contemplating the option (lights changing red to green); this guy is just saying that he is running away from reality when he says that he is turning tv stations (just to divert his real worries at present time). Saturday, he is lost and went over to use drugs, provably because he can handle it any more, the idea of not having her next to him, the woman he loves. He expreses his open feelings by saying that he was sure that he really love her and is asking her to reconsider if she wants, and if she want to give it another try to their relationship than just "come and get it". On sunday, the day for resting (in many societies), he has finally come down to the understanding that he just have to let it go. However he knows that his life from this point on will be filled with regrets, sorrow and sadness for having lost his love one; knowing that she has finally moved on and wondering who will be the one next to her (and wondering where it is you might be going to), and deep inside he knows she will never be coming back to him again, but wishing or hoping that some day she might (turning around to see you smiling there in front of me).
