Fyi, this song was written by lionel richie, not elvis costello, (ec's version of a song "still", is a totally different song)
this song is reflecting a guys after thought: how could a relationship not make it, if he still carries such an undying love for her. There are more lyrics to it too. They both always wanted to meet someone just lie each other, so how is it this wouldn't work? When he is up all night with missing her in his heart, he questions if it was his fault? Reminded of the moments that led to hurtful words spoken. No apologies, when it's now clear they were needed in order to heal. And it is clear they ended up there, when they both showed off their egos, manipulative head games, testing the sarcastic boundaries carelessly hurting with no remorse. The moment he felt he also didn't need her in his life, now seems to have been a lie to himself, and maybe she did the same? I a way he knew the whole time, she really didn't men those words and maybe, just grabbing her and admitting how he felt, and saying, "i know you feel the same way" could have saved them. But ego again won. I know because I do love you still. I am totally in love with this song!
