Clairo – Bubble Gum lyrics
[Verse 1]
Sorry I didn't kiss you
But it's obvious I wanted to
Bubble gum down my throat and it's a curse
But my luck couldn't get any worse

[Chorus]
'Cause I swallowed the bubble gum
Oh, and these seven years will be pretty dumb
Pink flowers grow from my skin
Pepto bismol veins and I grin

[Verse 2]
You look so nice in your shirt
It's sad because it just hurts
I'd do anything for you
But would you do that for me, too
?

[Chorus]
'Cause I swallowed the bubble gum
Oh, and these seven years will be pretty dumb
Pink flowers grow from my skin
Pepto bismol veins and I grin

So, personally, I think this song is about someone who missed their opportunity to tell someone they liked them. I looked into it and flowers growing from someone's skin actually represents having a crush. I think this scenario is similar to the disease where flowers grow from someone's lungs. Flowers grow from someone's lungs when their love isn't returned. Also, the myth that bubble gum stays in someone's body for 7 years is mentioned. I think that "bubble gum down my throat" represents nervousness. I only think that because it follows the line "sorry I didn't kiss you". Also, another line that hints at unreturned love is "I'd do anything for you, would you do that for me too?". I also think that the line "you look so nice in that shirt. Is that because it just hurts?" means the person this song's pov is from's crush puts a lot of effort into their appearance, so people think more of them. Since that is pointed out I think they love them for their personality and not their appearance. Sorry, I might be totally wrong (I'm not good at symbolism), but it's just what I picked up.

For anyone wondering, the reason why it is called Bubble Gum, is because instead of the girl (speaking from her point of view) trying to reach out to this person she falls in love with, she’s tremendously nervous and insecure. She hides her emotions and doesn't confess her love. She regrets this greatly, because once she’s built the courage to confess, it’s too late. So in conclusion as to why it's called Bubble Gum, is because instead of enjoying the bubble gum, she swallows it. Just like instead of verbalizing her emotions, she swallows them.

This song also says, ‘These 7 years will be pretty dumb’ and that goes with the myth that gum takes 7 years to break down/fully be digested. She’ll be thinking about this in guilt for a long time. Another thing is ‘Pink flowers grow from my skin’, could refer to the (fictional) Hanahaki disease, where the victim begins to cough up flowers and petals start growing in their lungs and body.

When I listened to this song, I had just lost my grandma, who I had never in my life met because she was in Mexico and I was in the United States. It hurt so bad to listen to this song. "Sorry I didn't kiss you" didn't have to be romantic, to me, it just meant that I was so sorry I couldn't ever go to hug her, to give her a kiss on the cheek, to tell her how much I loved her. It just hurt so much to listen to Clairo sing about how much the next seven years were going to be hard, how it's sad because it just hurts and it does–it hurts so much. This song may not be about a loss like this, but to someone who is going through a loss, I sure as hell interpreted it like that.

honestly i think i think its about telling their crush that they loved them, and they had the chance to be with them. "I swallowed the bubble gum" i think its like swallowing your tears and accepting the result of not having the courage to tell someone that they love you? and "these seven years will be pretty dumb" maybe the pain stays with you for a long time, in your heart instead of your stomach. and when the seven years are over maybe thats when you can finally accept that its in the past and put it away. fyi this is just my opinion and how i view it not really experienced in this stuff :). so I see that there’s a lot highlighted in the second verse. I can explain a few of them:
oh and these seven year will be pretty dumb- refers to the legend that bubble gum takes 7 years to die gets in your stomach.
pink flowers bloom from my skin- may refer to the Hanahaki disease, a fictional disease which involves coughing up flowers, triggered by an unrequited love.
(these are just my guesses yall)

Bubblegum is originally made as a feeling of regret. “Cause I swallowed the bubble gum” is regretting saying or doing something. When you swallow bubblegum, it gets sucked into your stomach, the same as holding a regret. and so I think in this song she had said something that blurted out her mouth or did something she didn't mean to, and she regrets it.

This song talks about missing the chance to confess to your crush. The narrator has Unrequited love. She held her feeling back and lost the chance of confessing to her crush, which she regrets like the act of swallowing bubblegum. Like bubblegum, the pain will stick with her for a long time. The narrator also realizes many things the crush does for the pleasure of others and not her. This idea just causes her more pain. Instead of expressing her feelings, she just swallows them. In a way, the song is warning the listeners that they should take the risk and express their feeling. If they dont, the pain of watching their crush go on with someone else may be more painful than getting rejected.
