Chely Wright – Holy War lyrics
Perhaps it is fitting
The sky heavy and spitting at the ground
The sun hid above us
With a grip on my breath it had found
I’d let it out slow as you stood to go
And it rose high just as I slipped down
Then I whispered your name
Knowing well you would not turn around

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light

I want to let go of
All I think I know of how
Our story unwinds
And might turn back to find us somehow
We’ve both turned away
When wisdom would say
We’ve squandered forgiveness and time
And all they would allow
If I could offer both of us mine

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light

What held us together
Lay like a feather in my hand
Not enough weight now for flight
Or the freedom to land
We each take from the other
Now struggle is all that we share
It’s less than I am
And more than I think I can bear

We stand at the door
Like the holy make war
Both of us sure we are right
We move through it unseen
For the darkness between us
But I mean to leave on the light
But I mean to leave on the light

Since I happen to be here I will post about one of my favorite artists, Chely Wright. Yesterday I quoted from Chely's lyrics to Holy War - the chorus part - as the beginning of a letter I'm writing to a close friend. I just had a blowout with this friend. I was 1000 miles away at her house helping her recover post-hospital. Our conflict was so bad she sent me packing, back to the airport. I was 100% sure that she behaved a certain way, and she was 100% clueless that I could be describing her. We were literally at her front door having the last of the argument, and I later thought of "We stand at the door like the holy make war, both of us sure we are right." It's like two pieces of wood set in concrete, trying to knock each other down. Like Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Ford, both 100% sure. Chely has captured this universal essence of 'deep conflict,' likely drawn from her own conflict of hearing that 'being gay is a sin.' Her lyrics reflect back to me that it's not just me, others are in danger of standing their ground and having their hearts broken too. She has hit upon what divides people deeply, 'because I'm right; because the bible says; because we were here first; because I'm not willing to explore a different way forward.
