Billy Joel – The Longest Time lyrics

Whoa, oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Whoa, oh, oh
For the longest time
If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
What else could I do
I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

Whoa, oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Whoa, oh, oh
For the longest
I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
Is how I need you
And how you needed me too
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
But you feel so right
And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping too hard
But I've gone this far
And it's more than I hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
I'll take my chances
I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
I said to myself
Hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
You're wonderful so far
And it's more than I hoped for

don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
I want you so bad
I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

Whoa, oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Whoa, oh, oh
For the longest time
(To Fade)

Speaking as a person who really identifies with this song, I will speak from my point of view:
I recently found someone who reminded me what really being attracted to someone/in love with someone is like. I have dated a few people in the past couple of years, and though I liked them, it just wasn't that incredible magical spark. I only came to the realization that I'd hadn't had a really amazing romance "for the longest time" when I found this girl, and felt that magical spark again. In fact, I figured that I hadn't been experiencing the spark because "my innocence was gone", and I'd gone out with a bunch of people. I was afraid that the sort of teenage love struck feeling you get had gone away because I had become too seasoned with being with people. I worried I wouldn't ever feel that way again - but then I met this girl, and I've totally fallen for her. It hasn't happened for the longest time. But thank god it did. I will definitely take my chances, I want her so bad, and I intend to hold her for the longest time =d

As a master of lyricism, billy joel could paint the most beautiful pictures with his songs. This one is no different. There isn't much interpretation needed. He's just writing down what every person who has loved, lost, and recovered has experienced. Finding someone who repairs your broken heart and makes you feel safe and happy again. Doesn't mean you have to marry them, but they've shown you that life can go on and love can be reinvented even after loss and disappointment.

It's the alchemy of music + lyrics that makes this song so memorable. If in the right state of mind/heart it can blow you away. It's the first pop song I remember hearing and it has stayed with me since the age of 3 or so. It makes me feel like 'longing for' and the perfect answer for that longing have met and are happy. Two former 'at odds' emotions finally swirled together in a braid -- like harmony -- longing meet completeness. Happiness meet yearning and all is beautiful together.
