Written by Warren Zevon and P. Evans, c. 1970, United Artists/c. EMI Capitol Music Special Markets, 1996

Oh, today I shot Ramona, Ma
She ain't gonna cheat on me
Two years, I've been searchin' for her
Two years, she's been free

Well, I found her in a dance hall in Laredo
And she told me that she wanted only me
And I held her in my arms the way I used to
But when morning came she begged me to set her free

Oh, today I shot Ramona, Ma
She ain't gonna cheat on me
Two years, I've been searchin' for her
Two years, she's been free

Well. I tried and tried to ride away and leave her
With my head hung low, teardrops filled my eye
I rode back to town and found her with a drifter
And I knew right then Ramona had to die

Oh, today I shot Ramona, Ma
She ain't gonna cheat on me
Two years, I've been searchin' for her
Two years, she's been free

Well, I'm writing you this letter from Laredo
And tonight I'll ride across the Rio Grande
If I never live to see another sunrise
You know, I loved her
Ma, I hope you understand

Oh, today I shot Ramona, Ma
She ain't gonna cheat on me
Two years, I've been searchin' for her
Two years, she's been free

Oh, today I shot Ramona, Ma
She ain't gonna cheat on me
Two years, I've been searchin' for her
Two years, she's been free

This song was written by a fellow Warren met in a Hollywood nightclub in 1969. He originally wrote the song for a girl from Atlanta that had jilted him...bad ending... He wandered around Hollywood and met Warren at the Whiskey a Go Go on the strip. They became fast friends and drinking buddies. Warren wanted to ride a Harley and the songwriter had his bike parked out front. Warren wrote the music for the song and promised to do some art work but he never got round to it. The song caused a ruckus at the studio because Warren wanted it included on his latest album,"Wanted Dead or Alive" and the producer said it was too dark, too dangerous. Warren insisted and "A Bullet For Ramona" was cut and included on the album. The guy that wrote the song remained freinds with Warren for many years and became his bodyguard. He later worked as a body guard for Natalie Cole when she was going thru a nasty separation with her husband and after that he just disappeared. Warren's girlfriend at the time,Tulie was rumored to have slept with the bodyguard but from what I was told by him, it never happened, but it caused a split in the relationship with Warren.
