If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Blue silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go...

This desperation
Dislocation
Separation
Condemnation
Revelation
In temptation
Isolation
Desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
And so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

Wow. Apparently U2 believing in God implies that that's all they write about.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to watch a Bono interview and read some articles. Or maybe... listen to the song? This is obviously about heroin addiction. And quite possibly exactly what Enicole said.

I have always taken this song to be about Jesus's agony in the Garden of Gethsemane when he fearfully prayed while his disciples slept.

The first two stanzas are Jesus wondering about just giving up, not going through with what He knew was coming the next day.

But, the third stanza shows that he realizes what is to be gained if he goes through with it.

He still wants to "let it go, and so fade away...", but, no, He's "wide awake, I'm not sleeping..."

Yes, a lot of U2's lyrics come from the bible, but this song was written in respects to a friend of the bands who had over dosed on heroin on his birthday. Most of the song is a plea from Bono who expresses that he would do anything to change the circumstances. For instance "If I could through myself, set your spirit free. Lead your heart away."

    Brothers and sisters:
    You were once darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord.
    Live as children of light,
for light produces every kind of goodness
    and righteousness and truth.
Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
    Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness;
rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention
    the things done by them in secret;
but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
for everything that becomes visible is light.
    Therefore, it says:

    "Awake, O sleeper,
    and arise from the dead,
and Christ will give you light."

dislocate from this world, be different, disconnect, and isolate yourself in Christ, and he will make you wide awake, and you will be a new creation, awakened from the dead, a revelation to realize, that you have been resurrected from the dead man, and are now alive in christ
