Twenty One Pilots – Lane Boy lyrics

[Chorus]
They say, "Stay in your lane, boy, lane, boy",
But we go where we want to.
They think this thing is a highway, highway,
But will they be alive tomorrow
?

[Verse 1]
They think this thing is a highway, if it was our way,
We’d have a tempo change every other time change,
Cause our mind’s changed on what we think is good,
I wasn’t raised in the hood.
But I know a thing or two about pain and darkness,
If it wasn’t for this music I don’t know how I would have fought this
.
Regardless, all these songs I’m hearing are so heartless,
Don’t trust a perfect person and don’t trust a song that’s flawless,
Honest
, there’s a few songs on this record that feel common,
I’m in constant confrontation with what I want and what is poppin'.
In the industry it seems to me that singles on the radio are currency,
My creativity’s only free when I’m playing shows
.

[Chorus]
They say, "Stay in your lane, boy, lane, boy",
But we go where we want to.
They think this thing is a highway, highway,
But will they be alive tomorrow?
Will they be alive tomorrow?

[Verse 2]
I’m sorry if that question I asked last,
Scared you a bit like a Hazmat,
In a gas mask
, if you ask Zack,
He’s my brother, he likes when I rap fast
.
But let's backtrack, back to this,
Who would you live and die for on that list?
But the problem is,
There’s another list that exists and no one really wants to think about this.
Forget sanity, forget salary, forget vanity, my morality,
If you get in between someone I love and me,
You’re gonna feel the heat of my cavalry.
All these songs I’m hearing are so heartless,
Don’t trust a perfect person and don’t trust a song that’s flawless.

[Chorus]
They say, "Stay in your lane, boy, lane, boy",
But we go where we want to.
They think this thing is a highway, highway,
But will they be alive tomorrow?
They say, "Stay in your lane, boy, lane, boy",
But we go where we want to.
They think this thing is a highway, highway,
But will they be alive tomorrow?

[Bridge]
Will they be alive tomorrow?
Will they be alive tomorrow?
Will they be alive tomorrow?
Will they be alive tomorrow?

This says a lot about Twenty One Pilots as a band. They don't fit into any one genre, or "lane". they go where they want to. "There’s a few songs on this record that feel common I'm in constant confrontation with what I want and what is poppin' In the industry it seems to me that singles on the radio are currency My creativity’s only free when I’m playing shows" In order to sell, he has to write music that may or may not be what he wants to, because what he wants and what most people want are different.

Everyone that has really listened to Twenty One Pilots knows that they don't have a genre to describe their music although all of their songs have so much meaning. This song gives their fans an insight on what it is like for them as artists trying to be persuaded to make "mainstream" music so they can sell. But I think Twenty One Pilots has done a pretty good job at breaking that barrier that others make of needing to have a "lane" or a genre of music to be successful in the music industry.

"Lane Boy" is a song about originality. The music industry is geared towards making the same sounds over and over, because they're safe; they'll make money. Twenty One Pilots is one of the few new bands that I've heard that have a extremely varied genre. Tyler, the lead singer, has a problem with this industry business. They want him to stay safe, with the same sounds and maybe he's slightly scared too. But, in the end they put out music that is all different. Some people want them to stay on the "highway" or in one "lane", but Tyler is saying that there is no lane to him. He's off the path in a whole new meaning. He doesn't want to produce what sounds like the same song over and over, but rather wants to try out new beats and crazy lyrics.
