twenty one pilots – Stressed Out lyrics
[Verse 1]
I wish I found some better sounds no one’s ever heard,
I wish I had a better voice that sang some better words.
I wish I found some chords in an order that is new,
I wish I didn't have to rhyme every time I sang
.
I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink,
But now I’m insecure and I care what people think
.

[Pre-Chorus]
My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think.
My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think.

[Chorus]
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.
We’re stressed out.

[Verse 2]
Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young
,
How come I’m never able to identify where it’s coming from?
I’d make a candle out of it if I ever found it,
Try to sell it, never sell out of it, I’d probably only sell one.
It’d be to my brother, ‘cause we have the same nose,
Same clothes homegrown a stone’s throw from a creek we used to roam.
But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered,
Out of student loans and treehouse homes we all would take the latter
.

[Pre-Chorus]
My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think.
My name’s ‘Blurryface’ and I care what you think.

[Chorus]
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out
.
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.

[Bridge]
We used to play pretend, give each other different names,
We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away
.
Used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face,
Saying, “wake up, you need to make money", yeah.
We used to play pretend, give each other different names,
We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away.
Used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face,
Saying, “wake up, you need to make money"
, yeah.

[Chorus]
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out
.

[Bridge]
Used to play pretend, used to play pretend, money.
Used to play pretend, wake up you need the money.
Used to play pretend, used to play pretend, money.
Used to play pretend, wake up you need the money.

[Outro]
Used to play pretend, give each other different names,
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away.
Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face,
Saying, "wake up, you need to make money"
, yeah

There are various scenes throughout this music video that echo childhood, from riding around the neighborhood on tricycles, secret handshakes, or even drinking juice from a pouch, we are reminded of the simple pleasures of being young and having fun with our friends.
Even though I just recently discovered the band twenty one pilots, I have to say that I have become hooked in no time. They have music that not only sounds good, but it also contains lyrics that deal with very real things. The line that I chose to use as the title of this article really struck me after listening to this song a couple of times. Basically, this line shows the difference between being a child and having a wild imagination that can take you anywhere and being an adult where that behavior will get you nowhere and you must make money to achieve a happy and successful life. Because, remember kids, money is the key to happiness and it is also the only way you will ever be considered successful. Bullshit.
I have spent the last three years of my life in college classrooms learning about things that are hopefully going to help me succeed in the corporate world. Every time I come home for a holiday I am constantly asked what I am majoring in, which is then followed by some disapproving facial expression and the question “what are you planning on doing with a psychology degree?” I always offer a quick smile and continue to explain my post-college plans, still not convincing them that I know what the hell I am doing with my life.
Anyway, the point of all of this is contemplate why, as we grow older, do things have to change so drastically? Why does our imagination diminish? Why is it no longer acceptable to just have fun things? Why must we be so focused on making money that we forget that life should be a journey where we are constantly exploring instead of following a map that is leading us straight to “success” and “happiness” by means of making lots of money and proving to those around us that we are respectable because we wear a suit and tie to work everyday?
I think it is safe to say that success and happiness come in various forms and there is no set way to achieve these two things. Plus, who really knows what these two simple words mean? We all have our own definitions or ideas of what they mean and that’s okay. This is where the saying “you do you” becomes quite handy. There is no need to continue following that map through life. Pack your bags and start on this crazy journey we call life.

When I first heard this song from my brother I though nothing of it but now I see it explains me and my brother we are 6 years a part and hes now 18 and in the army which really affected me anyways when I said "Used to play pretend, give each other different names,
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away,
Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face,
Saying, "wake up, you need to make money."
It made me tear up because me and my brother would always play then when he turned 18 he became serious and joined the army. So now we don't play like we used to which sucks.

This is a wish. Tired of the stress, and tired of all the weight of the world, Tyler wishes that he could be a little kid again, when his mom was always there to comfort him and sing him to sleep. Just taking guesses from the lyrics of different songs, such as this whole song, and also from We Don't Believe What's On TV, "I used to say I wanna die before I'm old", I would guess that Tyler and/or Josh has some form of gerascophobia, which is the fear of growing old. I certainly do, and this song speaks my thoughts.

I think the song is about how he wanted it to be like when he was young. For example, it says, " used to play pretend give each other different names we would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away used to dream of outer space but now their laughing at our face saying wake up you need to make money!" So like now their older and they changed. Things changed.
