Train – 50 Ways To Say Goodbye lyrics
My heart is paralyzed
My head
was oversized
I'll take the high road like I should
You said it's meant to be
That it's not you, it's me
You're leaving now for my own good

That's cool, but if my friends ask where you are I'm gonna say

She went down in an airplane
Fried getting suntan
Fell in a cement mixer full of quicksand
Help me, help me, I'm no good at goodbyes!
She met a shark under water
Fell and no one caught her
I returned everything I ever bought her
Help me, help me, I'm all out of lies
And ways to say you died

My pride still feels the sting
You were my everything
Some day I'll find a love like yours (a love like yours)
She'll think I'm Superman
Not super minivan
How could you leave on Yom Kippur?

That's cool, but if my friends ask where you are I'm gonna say

She was caught in a mudslide
Eaten by a lion
Got run over by a crappy purple Scion
Help me, help me, I'm no good at goodbyes!
She dried up in the desert
Drowned in a hot tub
Danced to death at an east side night club
Help me, help me, I'm all out of lies
And ways to say you died

I wanna live a thousand lives with you
I wanna be the one you're dying to
Love... but you don't want to

That's cool, but if my friends ask where you are I'm gonna say
That's cool, but if my friends ask where you are I'm gonna say

She went down in an airplane
Fried getting suntan
Fell in a cement mixer full of quicksand
Help me, help me, I'm no good at goodbyes!
She met a shark under water
Fell and no one caught her
I returned everything I ever bought her
Help me, help me, I'm all out of lies

She was caught in a mudslide
Eaten by a lion
Got run over by a crappy purple Scion
Help me, help me, I'm no good at goodbyes!
She dried up in the desert
Drown in a hot tub
Danced to death at an east side night club
Help me, help me, I'm all out of lies
And ways to say you died

This song has a simple meaning. It's about a girl who breaks up with him and he doesn't want anyone to know. So if his friends ask "hey, where's your girl" he decides that he'll make up some lie just so he doesn't have to tell them the truth. She broke his heart, which we can tell from the lyrics "i want to live a thousand lives with you, i want to be the one you're dying to love, but you don't want to"

He doesn't want to be honest, that he was full of pride and the things you did wrong he wanted to hide, and had a big head, and was in love with a head that was red, and he wanted her to just forgive and her to give, when he wanted to be fake and take. She wanted to fly but all he did was want to make cry. Because they were not on the same page, all she did was be filled with rage. So she wanted the man of her dreams since an early age and he didn't want to get on the same page. He wanted to lie, she wanted to cry. So her only choice was to say change or bye. Because she realized life was to short to live in the past and she wanted something of truth, faithfulness, and something that would last. She wanted to fly in the sky, not sit around and cry, and she didn't want to live a lie, she did not want no more of a broken heart because he didn't want to do his part. She wanted to be his everything, but to him everything of non importance was his thing. For trust is the most important thing about love, it takes years to gain, a second to lose when lied too and makes one blue. So I say if he wants her the rest of his life, and wants her to be his wife, he needs to not say goodbye but ask her why, and listen to the answer and do something about it or if he is dying to love, but she don't want too.

I Have always been a follower of Train, appreciating their individualistic style that seems to place them in a genre of their own. This particular song is the comedic ideal of responding to a breakup, by someone seemingly too trite to connect, with a possible habitual use of the milked excuse of, "it's not you, it's me," when her need to run sets in. Her choice of words embody the the creativity she obviously seems to lack as a result of a void of passion or spontaneity, contributing only things she has rehearsed. While insulting at best to use the regergitated excuse, this only intensifies the creativity and absurdity of the hysterical excuses created in his explanation for the "breakup", or rather every other scenario other than a parting of ways to explain her absence to others. The originality of his coping mechanism creates envy for his ability to deal with what most consider to be a reason to stop living until the memories fade... amidst the laugh-out-loud lyrics, the quirky beat elevates the mood even further, causing the listener to reevaluate their own foolish ways of dealing with similar scenarios, recognizing a light-hearted approach in the future to what we normally fear... the dreaded breakup.

In my opinion, this is about the same guy, but 50 different women, each of them dying a different death. He doesn't want his friends to know he's a heartbreaker, so he tells them that the same girl when it was really 50 different girls, that she died in 50 different ways. They don't know that each one broke up with him, so he says that they all died in 50 different ways, but they think it's the same girl.

I agree with the person above me. She left him and he doesn't want to accept it because as clearly stated in the lyrics he wants her for the rest of his life. He also mentions how his pride was hurt, with this comes the lie(s) he makes up for his friends. He mentions that he's not good with goodbyes so he can't just face the fact that she didn't want to be with him. Now the controversy comes with the title: 50 ways to say goodbye. Some people say that the title makes no sense because he's listing "50 ways to die" but that's the point. Those are the only ways he can say goodbye to her, since he is not good at saying goodbyes.
