The Mavericks – Here Comes My Baby lyrics
(Cat Stevens)

In the midnight moonlight hour
He's walking along that lonely mile
And every time I do
I keep seeing this picture of you

Here comes my baby
Here she comes now
And it comes as no surprise to me
With another guy
Well here comes my baby
Here she comes now
Walkin' with a love, with a love
That's oh so fine
Never to be mine no matter how I try

You'll never walk alone
And you're forever talkin' on the phone
And I try to call your name
But every time it comes out the same

Here comes my baby
Here she comes now
And it comes as no surprise to me
With another guy
Well here comes my baby
Here she comes now
Walkin' with a love, with a love
That's oh so fine
Never to be mine no matter how I try

Here comes my baby
Here she comes now
And it comes as no surprise to me
With another guy
Well here comes my baby
Here she comes now
Walkin' with a love, with a love
That's oh so fine
Never to be mine no matter how I try

I agree with the other commentators that it appears to be a dream. When he sings " I keep seeing this picture of you," that is different than something like, I see you every time. The picture of you, seems to be something that he is calling up from in his mind.

Another possible interpretation, Which is less morbid than the death experience, is that it is a report of what has been a recurring bad dream on the part of the singer. It is happening in the midnight hour, where most dreams occur. He tries to call her name, unsuccessfully, another indication that it is a dream, where we are usually not able to accomplish what we are desperately trying to do. Still sad, whether a death experience, or a dream.

I haven't seen anyone else interpret the song like this, but to me, I wonder if the very first verse is a reference to the narrator on his death bed, dying. The midnight hour, walking that long lonely mile, seems to represent the beginning of his journey from life, to the afterlife. And it is a sad journey, as he was never able to connect to the girl that he had a huge crush on. Sad, if this is indeed what the lyrics are meant to say.
