I'm a dead man walking here
But that's the least of all my fears
Ooh, underneath the water

It's not Alabama clay
That gives my trembling hands away
Please forgive me father

Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e'er I go
Won't do me no good washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul

Did that full moon force my hand?
Or that un marked hundred grand?
Ooh, underneath the water
Please forgive me father

Miles and miles in my bare feet
Still can't lay me down to sleep
If I die before I wake
I know the Lord my soul won't take

I'm a dead man walking
I'm a dead man walking

Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles
Keep walking and running and running for miles

Ain't going back to Barton Hollow
Devil gonna follow me e'er I go
Won't do me no good washing in the river
Can't no preacher man save my soul

It sounds like a whole bonnie and clyde deal. It sounds like they murdered someone after they found out about a botched bank robbery. Then they buried the guy in barton hollow and the clay they feels taints them like how the lord might not want their souls after commiting such a sin.

They killed a man for revenge and money by drowning him in barton hollow. Then they buried him in alabama. The crime is punishable by death. Now his conscious is getting to him. He thinks that no one can save him now. And he wont ever be able to get to heavan no matter what he does. And he keeps trying to get away from his past.

This song makes me think of a card game gone wrong or maybe a botched bank robbery. Someone was killed for that 100 grand in barton hallow and they can never return. But it doesn't matter where they run to they can never run away from the crime committed. And they believe there will never be any peace for their souls because of the murder.

A murder was commited, based o n a 100 grand hit. He can't escape the sin, but the memory is in barton hollow.
