The Avett Brothers – Matrimony lyrics
Things didn't work out like they should,
Farther from how you thought they would
Do you still want my hand?
Do you think I'm still your man?
I'll change everything I can.
Matrimony...

Holy plans and holy gifts
Holy shit what did we get
You said you've got plans of your own
You're gonna work and I'll stay home.
Do you still want my hand?
Do you still think I'm your man?
I'll change everything I can.
Matrimony...

My dog is loud and my dog is wild
We're too young to have a child
Can you keep the dog next week?
I'll be gone the next three.
Do you still want my hand?
Do you still think I'm your man?
I'll change everything I can.
Matrimony...

I ain't through I ain't walking out
Leaving ain't what I'm about,
You may scream and I may shout.
But baby I love you.

In response to the other poster: almost... I mostly agree with what you’re saying, but the “three weeks” couldn’t be the honeymoon. He says “I’ll” be gone, not “we’ll,” and from the beginning of the song, he indicates that things haven’t worked out like they planned—so the honeymoon is over, both literally and figuratively! Lol. I think he’s gonna take off for a little while because he’s had enough (of what, I don’t know—her making her own plans without including him to the extent that she doesn’t want children, and all of this is not what he had expected, perhaps. . . And maybe it’s not that this is wrong to him in and of itself, but he realizes that *he* doesn’t really have plans of his own or know who he is, so he needs to take off for a while. . . In any case, that’s likely what the screaming and shouting is about, but in the end he wants to work it out... perhaps while gone, he discovered that along with whatever else. My issue with the song, so to speak, is that I really love it—there’s just something about it... but that “something” has *almost,* but not quite (or not for sure) an ominous feel! As if we could be ready is completely wrong, and he’s not the “leaving type” but he is the “killing type” LOL!!! I don’t think this, but I wish there were more to go on because there does seem to be something a little more being hinted at with the dog metaphor and the overall tone, but I just don’t know what, which is why I’m here. I think it’ll always kind of bug me, lol, but I’ll still love the song ;)

Well, it seems like the guy is devoted to the relationship while the girl is having second thoughts. Like shes saying she is gonna make him stay home whle she works, but the man wants to work through the differences, he is even looking for someone to take the dog for their honeymoon possibly? And at the end he says he isn't giving up that easily, because he lovs her.
