I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.

CHORUS
Away, I'd rather sail away
Like a swan that's here and gone
A man get tied up to the ground
He gives the earth
It's saddest sound,
It's saddest sound.

I'd rather be a forest than a street.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.

I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet,
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.

The singer believes in reincarnation and he is sharing his wishes of what he would rather be in his next life. He likes independence, challenges and adventures. He wouldn't like to be reborn a human being but rather an animal or plant as he considers people to be causing trouble to the earth. At the same time he prefers staying on the earth feeling it beneath his feet as well as exploring other places, not just being confined at one place.

A flight in the air, like a bird with no care, singing a cheerful song has always been my dream. Natural feeling gives peace, and tranquility. That's the inspiration i get from this song!!

The words convey the longing which most people feel at some time, to be in control of their lives, to cease being a victim, to exercise power and be the master of their own destiny.

The meaning of this song is rather obvious. Who wants to be the one who gets the bad things in life? Unfortunately, the fact that the lyrics say "if I could" indicates the singer is living the negative, and longs for the opposite, but has no power to change his situation.
