Rick Nelson – Garden Party lyrics
I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

People came from miles around, everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air
'n' over in the corner, much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

Lott-in-dah-dah-dah, lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came
No one heard the music, we didn't look the same
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me
When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

Lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
Lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode
Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should
If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck
But if memories were all I sang, I rather drive a truck

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

Lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
Lot-in-dah-dah-dah

'n' it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

When he sang at a reunion gig at Madison Square Gardens people expected him to look the same as his earlier years but his appearance had changed, not the clean cut all american boy they were expecting, and he was more into country songs, and when he sang honky tonk woman there was a lot of booing from the audience, and he walked of stage, there is some confusion as to whether they were booing Ricky, or if they were booing the police who were dealing with a disturbance in the crowd, any way that's what the lyrics in the song refer to. Great song.

I read somewhere that his sons explained the song. In his later years, Ricky grew his hair long and looked like a hippie, not the perennial boy next door. People at the party were upset, they thought he should look the same as he did on "Ozzie and Harriet". He just wanted to be himself, not who the world wanted him to be.

I love this song! I grew up in this era but still a bit before my time! Today I am making a playlist for a road trip, and when I was really listening to the words, I was thinking "they did what to him"? I'm glad he wrote this song, and now I understand! I knew Ono brought her Walrus, meant John Lennon and I hope he really was gracious! I would certainly like to think so. Dylan, hilarious and appropriate. Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge!

"Mr Hughes in Dylans shoes". Brilliant. Bob Dylan wasn't the freedom rider, folk activist, his PR people wanted you to believe. There is only one person in Dylans world...Robert Zimmerman.
In an interview he said the only one who was civil to him was John Lennon. Lennon understood not having to do the same songs over and over and changing your stle.
