He initially refused to show the band members the song because he felt it made him seem weak but John Frusciante made him read it and instantly came up with the guitar riff, thus the song was born. -Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis is his autobiograhpy which details this

It was kind of a remembrance song to his late bandmate Hilel. More adament fans may be able to add more to the story... but that's when the band realized how scary drugs can get.
