Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond lyrics
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.

Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the cross fire of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger,
You legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Treatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
You piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and i'll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
And sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
Come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

We used this song as the background to a slideshow of pictures after my son's death. My son was brilliant but schizophrenia threw his life into chaos. He then became a I. V. Drug user, had multiple blood borne and other infections that cause his heart valve to fail, at the age of 36. He has asked his sister that this be played for him if he should go first. I know it's not written for my son but it surely seems like it was written for someone like him.

I'm lost--lost in a world that I don't understand. I try desperately to understand it, and help heal, transform and create in it, but the more I understand, the darker and deeper the conspiracy against me seems to get. I don't know how to understand anything, except thru my imagination, but what was once my greatest asset is now my enemy's strongest weapon. I long for clarity. I am clear like a diamond, but multi-faceted, but if you look at each facet, you will see it is clear, and that all the competing and contrasting facets only adds to brilliance and beauty. I wish to share this brilliant multi-faceted diamond with you, in a partnership of forever, whatever that means in this reality I don't understand. It already has been forever, but I want to heal all the hurt and pain and misunderstanding. I want to explain, one facet at a time, as the light shines on them, what each facet means, and how such different facets can come tegether to make a beuatiful gem that never bores or becomes stale or predictable. Love me as I am, give me a chance, talk to me and let me show reveal to you, one facet at a time, this crazy diamond.

More haunting still, and I think this comes through in the origional recording, was that after not seeing Syd for quite some time he walked into the studio while they were recording this, of all songs.
There is often an underlying theme of insanity and remorse of loss as well as a profound honoring of the past that is seen in many of the works of Pink Floyd. Probably why these tunes strike us so deeply. And will be around for as long as mankind recognizes these aspects of humanity.

Music. It’s it’s an outlet for me. Everyone’s tastes are different. It is poetry I love finding and listening to songs that I feel so deeply connected to at that moment in my life or something in my past. Good or bad. It therapeutic. And sometime I have be aware of songs that put me in a dark place. I’m rambling. To the point. Song meanings, I think are best left to yourself. Why even bother trying to figure out what the writer is trying to convey. I’m worlds worst at this. But I think ima try not even consider what what the lyrics mean from the writer view. But just let the song lead me to my personal place and feelings. I feel sometimes some artists want you to do this. And hold back on the interpretation details. For good reason. Personally looking up meaning/translation of songs had a kinda stole my personal connection. When if find a song was no where near about what I got out of it, i end up staying with what it makes me relate to anyway. It is interesting to me too look up lyrics and compare my interpretation to others. Thanks for your time.

The meaning is clear; they lost a brave, lost, searching, deep, sad, important to the world creator of beauty; prisoner of himself, caught between childhood and stardom- I've never been in the childhood/stardom zone, but have been many of the other places- (without the unbelievable creativity he had). I am in recovery; just wishing I didn't hafta be today for a minute, clean 28 years out of the last 30; where is all the meaning? I love what syd made, I hate what took him. And I loved the same addiction I hate.

You are going to be a martyr whether you want to, or not. In your final moments you will be reborn into immortality as a legend if you desire it. Become the diamond you were destined to be. Be in love with death. Because, to live in this world, you must look forward to the end through the eyes of the insane to maintain your sanity. It's the only choice you've got. Romance your inner necromancer. For you are a prisoner, and never doubt it.

Syd barret was a great artist and the whole album wish you were here was dedicated to him. In late 70s he was in depression due to the effect of psychedelic mind altering drugs like lsd and marijuana which altered his perception and he went mad after overdose, suffered from some random brain disease.
Roger's lyrics somehow matched with the guitar chords played by gilmour and soon they were recording it.
Once randomly syd appeared in the studio and when they were recording soycd roger asked him how was the song.
He was silent for a moment (kinda dumbstruck) later replied it sounds pretty old.
    Echoes
    syd barret. Nostalgia.

It can be interpreted as a person or group of people who have historically been surpressed. The genius' reduced to silence because of what society has pushed on us as the "right" ways to act and do things. Yes, it's about syd, but if you look further, the message can be for everybody, and that's the point of it. It's telling the oppressed genius to break out of this prison of conventional thought and shine, like we were all meant to do. Let us see your sparkling diamond, quit hiding yourself inside and shine.

To me, "shine on you crazy diamond" is a powerfully inspiring call to the soul, to the potential in all of us to let our inner flame blaze, to honor our true essence, our individual and cosmic nature, to be and manifest who we truly are. We can transcend our narrow roles and self-judgments and boldly shine. Our ultimate nature is unbelievably beautiful and our personal nature is so unique that we can seem to be "crazy" to each other and even to ourselves. We can joyfully embrace this "craziness," as long as we handle it in a positive way. Pink floyd (in music and soul energy as well as lyrics) collectively bring us this masterpiece as a powerful example and invitation!

I guess the remaining members of Pink Floyd wrote this in honour and love for a dear friend. But when you find out that Syd Barrett was slowly ousted from the band when his behaviour became more erratic and unmanagable you have to ask yourself why urge an ex-member to 'shine on' after you have got rid of him. He was with Pink Floyd at the beginning and was majorly responsible for the development of the Pink Floyd sound. Okay the bands sound needed to mature and perhaps Syd was either or was against it or didn't want it. But, they could have managed his fragile state in another way. And, come on if you were a bit loose in the head department would you want your ex-band mates writing a massive hit about it and telling the world your 'crazy'. Maybe he would have just wanted to go back home walk into a local pub and chat up a ladyfriend. But they scuppered those plans didn't they. Oh look there's the nutty one from pink floyd with a pint in the corner.

The song was primarily written about 'syd barrett', the ex-band member of pink floyd. Barrett left the band due to his deteriorating mental health and went into self imposed seclusion. He mostly spent time doing painting during post music days which has been mentioned by 'you painter' in the lyrics. The rest of the band members asking barrett to come back to shine again as a diamond like he used to be. The strangest of all was the sudden appearance of barrett during the studio sessions of the song in 1975.

Soak your diamond ring in a warm sotoliun of mild liquid detergent and water. Ivory dishwashing liquid is a good choice, but any other mild detergent is fine. Use a soft brush if necessary to remove dirt. Soft is the key don't use a brush with bristles that are stiff enough to scratch the ring's metal setting. Swish the ring around in the sotoliun, and then rinse it thoroughly in warm water. Close the drain first, or put the ring in a strainer to keep from losing it! Dry the diamond ring with a lint-free cloth. If the diamond and setting needs extra help, use a dental water pik to flush away small bits of grime. You can also use a wooden toothpick to very carefully push dirt away from the diamond and setting. You might already protect your hands from harsh chemicals, but if you don't, think about how chemicals such as chlorine can affect your fine jewelry. Remove your rings or wear gloves to keep chlorine away from your rings. Good try.

The terrible truth is that none of us should feel content in this life, only hope to ride the waves of insanity and keep afloat.
After all if you can be truly content while there is a tsunami of death, suffering, corruption and evil washing over the world then you have become a part of that cruel narrow reality and insanity.
That feeling is pretty much expressed in the comfortably numb lyrics, how we all conform to a lesser or greater degree and sell our souls in the process - unless you are crazy diamond of course.
Extract from wish you were here;.
Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

Wow. You just have to get on with it. The illusion is gone. You're gonna get beat up but you have to be you and shine through no matter what happens. We don't know where we are going till we get there. We just have to believe and once you are there you continue on. This song also represents more than a few hours of watching the pretty patterns on the walls with mouth agape in amazement at david gilmours guitar work. It's all out there we just have to shine and visualize. And shine again. It's so cyclical. Why did this pop up here. It never has before. We are all individuals. We all have our own "shine". I prefer to shine from the heart right now. I need some of them store bought teeth. Then I can dazzle. Lol peace.

We are so trapped by the will of those once trapped, they flew when they crushed those not willing to crush. The mentally ill are laughed at a distance by society as just a statistic. But as an individuals they are the dimonds that make this world beautiful. Look at van gogh what a crazy diamond with such a split bi-polar soul, he was drudged out. But a bi-polar is the same man of anchients with the gifts of prophesy.

I suppose Piper refers to the myth of Osjan, the bard from a false pre-Christian Irish legend (with in fact was written by a fraud in sorta xix century, but made a huge impact on European culture, creating the myth of a bard-prophet who unites the nation in times of danger. It also refers to power of music as a force that may change the world, lead the way, unit etc.).

He was born with the genetics to be insane. Drug use just further brought on the process. The band had the right to stay in control for their destiny and thus eliminating him. It appears that he never really engaged in any consistent mental health therapies and his sister, (to this day,) is in total denial as to how sick he was. This is a classic and tragic example of insanity & and I doubt even modern psychiatric medicine could have reached him.

The story goes that the Syd Barrett's drug and mental issues becames unhealthy for himself. During his last concert he bashed a hole into a his speaker, stuck his head in and strummed randomly. His enlistment into a facility to aid in his recovery probably saved his life. Mr Barrett was not sent walking from the band only to sit in a pub wondering what happened, he needed help that his bandmates just could not offer.
