(by The Mamas And The Papas)

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.
California dreaming
On such a winter's day
Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray
I pretend to pray
You know the preacher likes the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay
California dreaming
On such a winter's day
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day
If I didn't tell her
I could leave today
California dreaming
On such a winter's day
California dreaming
On such a winter's day
On such a winter's day

The original belongs to The Mamas And Papas.

The group had moved from L.A. to New York in hopes of bettering their careers, but fell on hard times, financially and personally.

This song is about John's feelings on one of those many times they discussed going "home", and knew they couldn't... at least, not right away.

A short six months later, California Dreaming became one of the most successful of the pop-folk songs of the 60's.

No it is about John burning love of some girl in his past, who rejected him in a meeting with her where she rejected him and then shocked he went for a walk. If he did not meet her he would still be ok but now every thing is sad in his eyes, the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
