Hey... oooh...
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...
Uh huh... uh huh... ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Aah... uuh..

Too doo doo too, too doo doo [many times until fade]

I take from it, that he had her, and thus in his present state of mind, he had it all. Although I think he references a jeolousy and insecurity on himself (... i can hear their laughter, so why do i care? Oh and twisted thoughts that spin round my head...) My interpretation of this may not be correct (although when one intreprets a song, there is no real correct and incorrect, only how they particularly were influenced by the song, and such is relative) the fact remains that he did loose her, and yes he most likely is crying alone in his personal darkness. Though what I find most inspiring about this song is despit it all, despit having her than loosing her, despit the emotional wreck he seems to be left in, he doesn't get negative about his thoughts her, and his feelings for her. Many of us have loved and lost, and know that those feelings are easier replaced with a negativity for the other. A negative view of what happened, how they treated you, and what you feel of them now. But in this song, despite painting a beautiful portrate of his anguish, he hasn't fallen to that low. He doesn't really get it twisted about how things were. (Ooh, and all I taught her was everything Ooh, and I know she gave me, all she could) He see's its in his faults that lead to the pressent situation, and thus (I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, In somebody else's sky) he keeps her memory as pure as possible and in my opinion, in that statment, opens the door to his recovery over her. Although at present he is still in a world of hurt and regret for his lose, and thus (...But why, Why, why can't it be, can't it be in mine?... Aah... Uuh..)

Eddie Veder genius, me thinks so...

I agree to those who say that he is crying in the darkness, his darkness. And to add more to it, the so called "sun" is(was) his girlfriend. He knows that she will find someone else. The Result of that is because the relationship just didn't work out well enough. He doesn't clearly understand why she left him, but she did anyway. He is crying in his darkess, and gave up on everything. The love that he shared with his girlfriend has filled his mind with the memories and has "turned his world to black" (which means he got utterly depressed) and the memories have "tattooed all he saw"(which means whenever he looked at anything, he was depressed and couldn't get it out of his mind). It "tattooed all he was" (which also means that he got disappointed in himself and hated himself. And...it "tattooed all he'll be" (he realized he wasn't good enough and gave up. Simple as that. Hooah!

the light that was shining in his heart has gone away, and now he has realized it and he's crying into the darkness, pondering what went wrong.
