Love is eternal sacred light
Free from the shackles of time
Evil is darkness, sight without sight
A demon that feeds on the mind

How'd it all begin? Started with a bang
Couple of light years later, stars and planets sang
Fire warmed the cold, waves of colors flew
Moonlight into gold, earth to green and blue

Love is eternal sacred light
Free from the shackles of time
Evil is darkness, sight without sight
A demon that feeds on the mind

Earth becomes a farm
Farmer takes a wife
Wife becomes a river and the giver of life
Man becomes machine
Oil runs down his face
Machine becomes a man with a bomb in the marketplace
Bomb in the marketplace, bomb in the marketplace

Love is eternal sacred light
Free from the shackles of time
Evil is darkness, sight without sight
A demon that feeds on the mind

Big Bang
That's a joke that I made up
Once when I had eons to kill
You know, most folks
They don't get when I'm joking
Well, maybe someday they will

Love me
Love me
That's the main request I receive
Well you know I love all my children
And it tears me up when I leave

But sometimes you gotta fly down that highway
Free as a bird, knock on wood, thank the Lord
I am driving along in my automobile
It's a brand new pre-owned '96 Ford

Check out the radio, pop music station
That don't sound like my music to me
Talk show host, what's that boy's name?
Politics is ugly

At the end of the dial there's the gospel show
Maybe now I can exit and rest
There's a blizzard rolling down off the banks of Lake Michigan
Gonna cover the roads of the icy Midwest

Love is eternal sacred light
Free from the shackles of time
Evil is darkness, sight without sight
A demon that feeds all the mind
Love is eternal sacred light
Love is eternal sacred light
Love is eternal sacred light

I think the song is about good and evil, and that the Creator is the source of both these things. It's an on-going struggle between good and evil. In the 2nd verse that struggle shows up in humanity's tendency to become machines that do not think or feel, then end up killing one another. We see the struggle in God himself, who has a dark side that speaks in the 3rd verse. In the last part of the song, we are driving in our cars and trying to make sense of the confusion we encounter, as well as facing the icy roads Nature brings our way.

At first I didn't get the song and I thought it was just a weird song… but then when I finally thought about it I realized this song is about God, and the importance of love. I think the other voice in this song is supposed to be God. He says "love me, thats the main request I receive" which to me is saying that people are not loved enough. The deep voice also says "the big bang was a joke I made up" which is downing science and saying that God has a sense of humor and then saying hopefully some day people will get the joke. He also says he made up the joke when he had eons (eternity) to kill.
I'm not the greatest theist but I give major props to Paul for doing this. I've never been a huge Paul Simon fan but he really is a legend and its too bad songs like this don't get recognized. A very humbling and peaceful meaning. Something you don't hear in songs very often these days. I guess that's why in the long run he's considered such a great songwriter. As a musician I'm jealous, because its almost impossible to put yourself in that position these days and make money at the same time. Stan.
