She should have stayed away from friends
She should have had more time to spend
She should have died when she was born
She should have worn the crown of thorns
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have stood out in the crowd,
She should have made her mother proud,
She should have fallen on her stance,
She should have had another chance,
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have stayed away from friends
She should have had more time to spend
She should have died when she was born
She should have worn the crown of thorns
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son
She should have been a son

Cobain was a master song writer who tapped into some type of collective consciousness and his songs had meaning to everyone who listened. To try and state one particular meaning would be folly although to me it is pretty obvious what he was writing about. Not being kurt cobain, however, far be it from me to tell you what I think this song is about. However, I think it resonates in all of our collective consciousness. The reference to jesus and "the crown of thorns" puts this song over the edge as does the line "she should have died when she was born. " he sounds a little ticked off.

The meaning is not politically correct and therefore had to be written in a song. She should have stayed away from friends and she should have had more time to spend. When you get to the part about the crown of thorns, ask yourself, would that even be possible? In today's society women are taking on traditionally male occupations including those which could be considered dangerous such as soldiering. What does anyone have to prove concerning laying your life down for a cause and why do we think it is so reprehensible for the gender that bears life to sacrifice life for a cause. Because it is not natural. Don't you feel the angst and anger. I think kurt loved women and was so dismayed about the possibility of them trying to act like men it was just one more. Source of irritation for him.
