When I first heard this song I thought the third verse went like this: '"Will you remember me?" you ask me as I leave. "Remember what?" I said. Oh how could I, oh how could I forget?...' Like he was breaking it off, because he knew he wasn't good for her, but was thinking about how he would never forget her. I think partly because there's a pause after "I said" as if that finishes the thought. Plus, though songs rarely have "proper grammar" that would make it parellel structure and make more sense, "" you said, "" I said...I don't know, I think it could be interpreted either way.
