I killed a man 'cause he killed my goat
I put my hands around his throat
He tried to reason with the sky and the clouds
But it didn't matter, 'cause they can't hear a sound

It's just the curl of the burl
It's just the curl of the burl
That's just the way of the world
It's just the curl of the burl

Splinters in my skin
Just like needles and pins
I cut through pine
Love the feeling it gives
Been out here for days
Running through these trees
I'm using my hands
Cutting through the disease

It's just the curl of the burl
It's just the curl of the burl
That's just the way of the world
It's just the curl of the burl

I feel the powerless
Chew it up
Spit out the rest

I feel the powerless
Chew it up
Spit out the rest

It's just the curl of the burl
It's just the curl of the burl
That's just the way of the world
It's just the curl of the burl

Mystery solved. This is from mastodon's website:

In a recent interview, troy explained the meaning behind curl of the burl:

The burl is the knot that's found in various trees — it's almost like a cancer of trees. Within that burl are unique swirls or curls. A lot of people will cut those down and sell them to wood-makers, wood sculptors, and furniture makers because it's got a unique design to it. And this is a true story which happens in the pacific northwest — a lot of people go out in the woods with chainsaws, they find these burls, they cut them down, they load their pickup trucks with these burls, take them in to town sell them to various wood-makers, take the money from that, purchase more meth, go back in the woods and continue that circle of insanity. So it's based on a true story. People will steal your cars, steal copper…and people will go out there in the woods and steal burls.

Just go to the mastodon website, a band member explains that it's about how people buy and sell rare tree burls in the are where they're from. Specifically, they are referencing crimes that have been committed by people trying to obtain these rare burls. I think underneath that though, they're making a statement that "it's just the curl of the burl" and yet people are doing bad stuff to get them. But they resign to the idea that "that's just the way of the world". Kind of a frustrated response with people's behavior and the lack of ability to explain it.

Where in the world are you guys getting anything referencing drugs n his song? I am from the lactic northwest and just because people sell trees and lumber for mony doesn't mean we buy drugs with that money. It's a real way to make a living here so don't stereotype

I could be way off here, but i like to see this song as about a cause and effect thing - "killed a man cause he killed my goat" and that "thats just the way of the world" from wiki, a burl forms in a tree where it undergoes some form of stress - doin' something hardcore, something else is gonna happen cause of it - but its just the 'curl' of the burl - its just what happens when you're trying to push something hard - but its just the way the world is. 'burl' can also mean "an attempt" in slang, but there are clearly references to trees in the song. Time to get out and give it a burl!

@whoever posted 2 comments ago. I left the comment that you said was the "biggest crock of bull ever". And now someone has posted the comment by troy sanders which i was referencing. So i guess that makes troy a "loser" like me huh? Well you, smart guy, should go fuck yourself in your own pretentious asshole. Just sayin'! Nw
