    Per Mastodon themselves:

"It’s about Susie Polay our accountant’s wife, who passed away of stomach cancer when we were recording the album. Her motto was pursue happiness with diligence, and that motto became the lyrics to the song. It’s such a pretty song, and it’s so sorrowful as well. It’s in her memory and for her husband Robert, to pass on her inspiration to the listener."

"pursue happiness with diligence" were the alleged last words spoken by buddha before passing away. Very clever quote, this band is witty.

If we agree that the hunter is about the death of brent's brother, then look to the lyrics of that song when he says the sparrow flies in the morning. This song, then, is a parting message or lesson from the brother's passing to 'pursue happiness with diligence'.

    "Pursue happiness with diligence.

These are the lyrics in the song, not what's above."

I concur with the above post, it says so in the album booklet as well, have tried to submit the correct lyrics a few times, but they were never accepted.
