Maroon 5 – Goodnight Goodnight lyrics

You left me hanging from a thread we once swung from together
I've lick my wounds but I can't ever see them getting better
Something's gotta change
Things cannot stay the same

Her hair was pressed against her face, her eyes were red with anger
Enraged by things unsaid and empty beds and bad behavior
Something's gotta change
It must be rearranged, oh

I'm sorry, I did not mean to hurt my little girl
It's beyond me, I cannot carry the weight of the heavy world
So goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, hope that things work out all right, yeah
Whoa

The room was silent as we all tried so hard to remember
The way it feels to be alive
The day that he first met her
Something's gotta change
Things cannot stay the same

You make me think of someone wonderful, but I can't place her
I wake up every morning wishing one more time to face her
Something's gotta change
It must be rearranged, oh

I'm sorry, I did not mean to hurt my little girl
It's beyond me, I cannot carry the weight of a heavy world
So goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, hope that things work out all right

So much to love
So much to learn
But I won't be there to teach you, oh
I know I can be close
But I try my best to reach you

I'm so sorry, I did not mean to hurt my little girl
It's beyond me, I cannot carry the weight of a heavy world
So goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
Goodnight, hope that things work out all right, yeah
Whoa, oh...
Yeah

Its about a guy who has hurt his girl and is on the road of redemption and forgiveness. When he realized what he has done, he changed into a man who's ready to admit he was wrong and hurtful. When he realized what he lost, he realizes that he is nothing without her, and I can relate to this because I took my ex for granted but now I know that I can be better.

In my case, it reminds me of my ex who had psychological problems (anxiety, focus, depression) that affected his ability to feel he could seek help, grow and change. He wound up hurting me because of the aformentioned stressors, plus general immaturity and lack of self control. He feels horrible for hurting and disrespecting and breaking our love and ruining the ability for us to ever be able to reconcile. He doesn't know how he'll recover. He has hit rock bottom and now really needs to change. However, he accepts that we are over because he became toxic. It was all his fault. However, he's still hoping I am okay and is forever sorry but knows he has to make his exit in my life. The thing is, I know people have psychological problems, but it is up to you to take control and people choose to give up or not try so take the song with a grain of salt because not everything is out of your control. You can fight and win with a woman against your own demons.

It means, in my case, that my ex was dealing with much more psychological issues (focus, depression, anxiety) as well as general immaturity, selfishness and lack of self control so he wound up hurting me irreporably. He's sorry, hit rock bottom and never meanto to include me in his downward spiral. However, a man does have choices he can make so this song should be taken with a grain of salt.
