Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think
About myself
And then there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah there she was
Like disco superfly
I smell sex and
Candy here
Who's that lounging
In my chair
Who's that casting
Devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely
Is a dream
Hangin' 'round downtown by myself
And I had too
Much caffeine
And I was thinkin'
'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah there she was
Like disco lemonade
I smell sex and
Candy here
Who's that lounging
In my chair
Who's that casting
Devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely
Is a dream
Mama this surely
Is a dream
Yeah mama this must
Be my dream
I could never find a definitive interpretation of this song, but I've read things as simple as, John Wozniak the lead singer had just finished having sex with his girlfriend, and they were having a post cotial cigarette when the girlfriend's roommate walked in and said 'Ooh, smells like sex and candy in here.' And so he made a song based on those words. A weird song with a weird story.
But anyway, I think the song is about someone who is sitting somewhere in a bar late at night stuggling with addiction and evaluating himself. There are numerous things that point to addiction, candy (people can be addicted to candies and chocolate), caffine, sex, alcohol (disco lemonade)
He's addicted to sex because as he is sitting there thinking, he sees a woman he would really like have sex with. He compares his addiction to sex with having a sweet tooth (likeness for sweet things such as candy). "Double cherry pie", "candy", "lemonade" all are sweet imagery.
I think the woman who walks in is a hooker, because he describes her in "platform double suede", and I don't know of many types of people who wear platform shoes these days. According to www.urbandictionary.com, "disco super fly" means someone who is good in bed, perhaps a professional.
As he sits there looking at this woman, he catches a reflection of himself. When he sees himself in the mirror he sees his inner demons pressuring him to submit to his vices. "who's that lounging in my chair? who's that casting devious stares in my direction?"
He wishes that this wasn't how his life was "Mama, this surely is a dream" It can't be real.
At the end of the song he decides that reality is what you make it, so "Yeah, Mama, this must be my dream". He decides that this must be want he truely wants in life.
