Leon Russell – A Song For You lyrics
I've been so many places
In my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and
I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly
But darlin' can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Darlin' can't you please see through me
Cause we're alone now and
I'm singing this song for you

[Chorus:]

You taught me precious secrets
Of the truth with holding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
Cause my love is in there hiding

[Verse 3:]

I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and
I was singing this song for you

[Repeat chorus and verse 3]

We were alone and
I was singing this song for you

This is a man who loves his woman deeply. Although he may not tell her often enough; he sometimes might even get distracted due to his career (traveling round at concerts) but he hopes she can feel, see and remember that he would not want to exchange her love for him nor his appreciation and love for her for nothing in this world. He is hoping that she'll remember that he tried to pour his heart out for her even in this one instance with the hope too that even if he passes before her she will never for get him and what she meant to him.

The woman that he is singing about is more highly evolved than he. She meditates and is centered and in alignment with the spirit vortex of love within. The ocean of golden, liquid love and spinning crystal fractals. The creator of all that is. (a place where there's no space or time.) she is teaching him truth and is very forgiving of him. He deeply loves and appreciates her and wants her to remember him when he is no longer in his physical body on earth.

From my perspective, this song is dedicated to God. He doesn't mention if it's a he or she, cause God can be perceived in many ways, some may think that God is a woman or an old man with long beard, when in fact it could be both, could be anything and anywhere at any time. That's why he mentions "in a place where's no space or time","You are a friend of mine".
The verse "I know your image of me is what I hope to be" means that the artist wishes to be better every day, which he is, but because sometimes negative thoughts are inevitable, he will never be good enough for himself.
"I've treated you unkindly" says that he couldn't always be perfect, as none of us can, but when he says "There's no one more important to me, Darlin' can't you please see through me" he's asking for forgiveness, he's asking God to look into his soul and see what he really feels.
"You came out in front and I was hiding" means that even though sometimes he was sad and depressed, the sun always came up and lit his way.
Finally, "But when my life is over/Remember when we were together/We were alone and/I was singing this song for you" shows his love for God will not end when his life ends, as he will always look up to them.
This is how I perceive the song, and I might just not be right, but just as well, maybe I am right, and this is what Leon Russel meant when he wrote this song.
    Thank you!

Sometimes we meet that one person we connect to on a completely different spiritual plain. Do we end up together? Do we part? In our memories we can always go back to that one moment when time stood still, knowing that the memory of the moment will always be there and that some where, at some time, they will be thinking of us. They will be "singing that song" just for us.

I think the "A Song For You" pertains a story of somebody who is, more or less, having a successful career in life. Success ables him to travel in so many places. But his career also prevented him to bare his inner feelings thus causing him to make bad decisions in his personal life. His journey towards success forced him to set aside whatever personal feelings that he perceived as threat to his aim for greatness. He was so focused in achieving his goal that he began to act like a person that he is not, - just so that he could reach the pinnacle of his dream career, which he eventually did. He became a famous person in the field that he wished to belong. And the rest of the world looked up to him in awe. Outwardly he is a person who has nothing to ask for in life... But deep within his success brought him emptiness... Withoit love.
But at one point, in his journey to success, he was able to meet somebody whom he deeply fell in love with. But his career and stature in the career world that he is living in prevents him to profess his love to that special person, that instead of showing love, he began to treat that person in an unkindly manner. That special person responded more kindness to him despite of his aggression. Indirectly, this special person taught him to be true to himself, made him able to stand and be responsible with those decisions that he made. It made him able to stand by his principle and not hide for fear of failure.
This made him love that special person all the more.... and his love grew more each day.... There was already a point that he wished, pethaps, that he was just a regular person to he could just express his love without being fear of losing his career or being rediculed by the society that he is in... His love grew deeper that he decided to express it one way orvthe other... But then fear of rejection overwhelms his heart that all that he could do is to sing a love song whenever the two could be together. As he sing a love song, his heart shouts with in of his love for that special person. Through his song he hopes that somehow that person can feel his love. How he wished that the two of them are in a place not defined by career, success, acceptance of the society... A place that even time has no meaning... A place that is limitless.... Without any border at all... A place where everyone is free to love anyone. A place where theres no space or time... But alas, they're not. So he is forced to accept that they are in fact living in a well defined space so all that he could do is love that person as a very special friend, close to his heart.
Somehow he wishes that, when he's gone from thisvworld, that person would remember those singing love songs times that they spent together.. and somehow hold it dear in his heart...

I believed the songs message is somehow a one sided love ,this song is written to man she loves , He is probably a friend, A man he cares so deeply but She cant even tell how much she loves him, As the lyrics goes" I love you in a place where there's no space and time" She loves the man but the man is in love with someone else,
She loves him for life since the day she met him but he just treats him as a friend.
The woman loves him so much that she was always around specially when he needs him,
He tells him his precious secrets and even comfort her in times of need, She wanted to tell him
about her feeling but she's afraid to do it . So she just end up singing it for him,

This song to me is about growth... someone reflecting on a past relationship. Maybe their first real relationship.. and even though it didn't work they learned so much from it... and have now made it to a place where they can be friends... the love he speaks of is not the romantic love but more of a deeper understanding and connection kind of ❤️ love.

I think it is about a person who is LGBTQ and their parents don't approve of their life style. I am trance gender and my family doesn't approve of me being trance. So this song speaks to me. I want to become a woman but every time I talk about it with them they say hurtful things like a man will never be a woman, even if they have reconstructive surgery, because they will not know what it is like to bleed.

As this song was written by Leon Russell, popularised by Donny Hathaway and covered by many artists (the best version is by Karen Carpenter) it seems clear that the song is neither about a man or a woman but sung to the person who the other person loves. This is born out by the phrases "in a place where there's no space or time" and "You are a friend of mine".

The verse "I know your image of me is what I hope to be" suggests that the author wishes to become better every day, and as negative thoughts can be inevitable, they will never be good enough for themselves.

"I've treated you unkindly" would indicate that they cannot always be perfect and when they say "There's no one more important to me, Darlin' can't you please see through me" they're asking for forgiveness.

"You came out in front and I was hiding" means that even though sometimes they were sad the sun always came up and lit their way.

Finally, "But when my life is over/Remember when we were together/We were alone and/I was singing this song for you" shows their love for each other and will not just because life ends.

My first partner loved leon and this song. I never was one to listen and try to understand the lyrics but as I got older I went online to listen and read the lyrics. This song is about our failed relationship and especially about me and my failure to verbalize my feelings for her. This is over 25 years ago. We have recently "reconnected" and it's been a catharsis for me & I think for her too. I have never really opened up and exposed my inner being to anyone else and felt so betrayed when she left me. I responded with anger although she kept reaching out to me before and after I got married. Wow, this became so complicated probably for obvious reasons.
